Billie Sue Simmons

Billie Sue Dye Simmons, age 88, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2022 in a Richlands, Virginia hospital surrounded by her family. She was born May 18, 1934 in Swords Creek, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Preston Lee Dye, Sr. and Elsie Mae Miller Dye. Billie was a graduate of Honaker High School Class of 1951. She loved her classmates and hometown and enjoyed weekly drives throughout Russell County. She loved God, her family, her church family, and her community. She was a faithful member of the First Assembly of God Church in Richlands, Virginia. She was a pianist for her church for decades and led the funeral ministry in organizing meals for bereaved families. In her early years as a Christian, she drove bus routes to invite and bring people to church. She loved sports and was at every football game from Smurf League to High School, basketball games (She always talked about being a guard on her high school team), baseball games (She was a catcher in high school), and wrestling matches throughout the years for both her son and her grandsons. She was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dennis Simmons; her brother, Preston L. (Buck) Dye, Jr.; and her beloved aunt, Edna Hughes. Survivors are: Daughters: Honorable Deanis L. Simmons of Bristol, Virginia Jennifer S. Brown and husband, Glayde of Richlands, Virginia Son: Jeffrey A. Simmons and wife, Teresa of Richlands, Virginia Sisters: Patty Boggs of Bluff City, Tennessee Maretta Lambert of Claypool Hill, Virginia Brother: Dallas Dye and wife, Danise of Blacksburg, Virginia Grandsons: Dennis “DJ” Simmons and wife, Katie; Evan Simmons (Lindsey Maynard); George “Trey” Brown (Anna Sword); and Dylan Brown. Great Grandchildren: Finnie Simmons, Penelope Simmons, Izabella Simmons, and Odin Simmons Special Aunt: Bobbie McAmis of Wise, Virginia Several Nieces and Nephews also survive. Special thanks to Dr. Kenneth McVey and Dr. Fady Tawadros who showed extraordinary compassion and care for mom and special thanks to the team of angels sent by God to care for mom at her home and stay by her side in the hospital: Ellen Carello, Donna Layne, Linda Green, Diane Whited, Edna Stiltner, and Evelyn (Noonie) Boothe. Funeral services for Billie Sue Simmons will be conducted Monday, November 14, 2022 at 7pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Buddy Herald officiating. Interment will follow on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at 11am at the Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon, Virginia. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to be at the funeral home by 10:15am. Pallbearers will be: Jeff Simmons, DJ Simmons, Evan Simmons, Trey Brown, Dylan Brown, Glayde Brown, and George Brown.
