Bob Mullins

John Robert “Bob” Mullins, age 84, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at the Commonwealth Assisted Living Facility at Claypool Hill, Virginia. He was born in Red Ash, Virginia and was the son of the late William Ernest and Maxie Hibbitts Mullins. He was the youngest licensed automobile dealer in the state of Virginia and operated businesses and dealerships in Virginia, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Florida. Bob’s contribution to the town of Richlands is immeasurable. He owned and operated several car dealerships, rental properties, restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, and the bowling alley. He loved flying and was the first to land a plane at the Richlands Airport. He loved playing golf, skiing, and even played football for the legendary Ernie Hicks at Richlands High School, where he graduated in 1950. He was an avid fan of RHS, Virginia Tech, and Alabama. He loved supporting his grandchildren as they played in Richlands Little League Baseball, Richlands High School, and Western Carolina University athletics. He served as chairman of the board of Humana Hospital/Clinch Valley and Richlands National Bank. He was awarded the citizen of the year award by the Richlands Area Chamber of Commerce in 1978. Bob was of the Baptist faith and attended Community Heights Baptist Church. He was a 32^ Mason, Shriner, and a KY Colonel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lynn Repass Mullins; son, Ernest Gibson Mullins; sisters, Evelyn Cartwright, Pearl Robinett Foreman, Marie Buckles Purcell, and Stella Cranwell; and brothers, Curtis, Earl, Jack, Douglas, Bill, Jr., Jimmy Lee, and James Warren Mullins. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors are: Daughters: Toni Lawson and husband, Scotty of Richlands, Virginia Susie Maynard and husband, David of Morgantown, West Virginia Mary Ann Strong and husband, Brad of Richlands, Virginia Sons: Bobby Mullins of Richlands, Virginia Charlie Mullins and wife, Tina of Richlands, Virginia Grandchildren: Amanda Lawson Pillion and husband, Todd; Whitney Lawson Belt and husband, Randy; Cecille Lawson Skeens and husband, Josh; Adrienne Mullins Freewalt and husband, Don; Tennessee Mullins; Mary Lynn Mullins, Ernie Maynard, Emily Maynard Johnson, and husband, Tyler; Bradley Strong; Reece Strong; Cole Mullins; and Chandler Mullins Great Grandchildren: Virginia Pillion, Teddy Pillion, Henry Pillion, George Pillion, Riley Belt, Ryan Belt, Mary Grace Skeens, Ricki Hendrick, and Scarlett Maynard. Funeral services for John Robert “Bob” Mullins will be conducted Thursday, January 29, 2105 at 2:00pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Bill Keele, Rev. Mike Rife, and Jim Boyd officiating. Interment will follow at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia. Grandsons and Sons in law will serve as pallbearers.
