John McCloud

John William McCloud, age 62 of Tannersville, VA died Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at his home. He was born August 30, 1948 at Richlands, VA and was a son of the late Robert William and Dorothy Graham Stinson McCloud. John was one of a kind, a good hearted man who loved his family and friends. After graduating from Richlands High School in 1967, he served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, VA and the Disabled American Veterans. He had worked for twenty-seven years as a coal miner with Consolidated Coal Company, Beech Fork Mines, and various other mines and was a member of the UMWA. John was a man’s man; he loved the outdoors and the beautiful mountains of home. He was an avid sportsman, who loved to coon hunt and to be with his dogs. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Rebecca Stevens McCloud; one daughter, Melissa Dawn Phillips and husband, Greg of Riner, VA; six sisters, Jane Meeks and husband, Gene of Alabama, Mary Ann Fields and husband, Gerald and Amanda Ruth Bailey and husband, Mark, all of Tazewell, VA, Patsy Lee Kinder and husband, Ronnie of Tannersville, VA, Carol Lynn Combs and husband, Bobby and Nancy Karen Combs and husband, Donald, all of Catawba, VA; one brother, James Graham McCloud of Ohio; two grandchildren, Robert Daniel Phillips and Ashley Marie Phillips, both of Riner, VA; fourteen dearly loved nieces and nephews; a friend who was like a brother, Ronnie Houchins of Saltville, VA; many other loving family members and many friends. Funeral services for John William McCloud will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 30, 2010 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with the Rev. Donnie Bailey officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, VA. Burial will follow at the McCloud Family Cemetery in Tannersville, VA. Pallbearers will be Brian Fields, Gerald Fields, Devin Stevens, Kevin Kinder, Ronnie Houchins, Ernest Nunley and Bobby Combs. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 – 9 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2010.
