Larry Dean Stiltner

Larry Dean Stiltner, age 59 of Pounding Mill, VA passed away quietly in his sleep Thursday, September 7, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his family and the love of his life, Little Mellie. He was born October 20, 1957 in Grundy, VA and was a son of the late Christopher Harold Stiltner and Lexie Hay Stiltner. Larry was a 1976 Graduate of Grundy High School, that same year he married Little Mellie. He was employed as a Heavy Equipment Operator at the Coke Ovens in Vansant, VA where he made some of the “best pals” in the world. He loved running heavy equipment and took pride in his job. Larry was an avid outdoorsman and loved being in the woods hunting and calling turkey or on the riverbank fishing. Larry was always willing to share his love of nature or a good hunting or fishing story with his family and friends. He was loved and respected by all who knew him, which was evident in the last days of his life as he was visited by so many wonderful people; his faith was in God and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his father and mother – in law, Bernice and Alice Coleman. Those who survive to cherish his memory includes his loving wife of over forty-one years, Mellie Coleman Stiltner; three daughters, Amy Stiltner-Childress and husband, David of Tazewell, VA, Rachel Deann Altizer and husband, Mike of Pounding Mill, VA and Ivy Mireka Stiltner of Tazewell, VA; special granddaughter, Autumn Alexis Sage Stiltner of the home; two sisters, Rebecca Stacy and husband, Bill “the go to man” of Pounding Mill, VA and Sandy Viers and husband, Wayne of Taylor, SC; three brothers, Nick Stiltner of Grundy, VA, Ron Stiltner of Johnson City, TN and Michael Dewayne Stiltner and wife, Trinia of Pounding Mill, VA; six grandchildren, Brian Austin Day and wife, Ashlyn of (Camp Lejeune) Jacksonville, NC, Marlea Ashlan Childress and Luke Harland Childress both of Tazewell, VA, David Wessley Greer of Pounding Mill, VA, Ireland Brooke Meadows and India Cheyanne Meadows both of Tazewell, VA; his friends and caregivers at Legacy Hospice; special nurse and sister-in-law, Ann Viers; several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, September 10, 2017 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with Pastor Danny Houchins officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, VA. Pallbearers will be Wayne Compton, Mike Stacy, Randy “Bird Dog” Street, Shannon “Twerp” Hodges, Craig Hunsaker and Brian “Brain” Rasnake. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 – 9 p.m. Saturday, September 9, 2017, where a small service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Houchins officiating and Larry’s granddaughter, Sage, participating.
