M'Ledge Cheek

Gloria M’Ledge Altizer Cheek, age 82, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017 at her home following a brief illness. She was born in Jewell Ridge, Virginia and was the daughter of the late, Bud and Eula Lowe Altizer. She was a graduate of Richlands High School Class of 1952 and has written the M’Ledge’s Kitchen article for the Tazewell County Free Press since it started publication in 1976. In addition, she has also written two cookbooks. M’Ledge enjoyed the many calls over the years asking for certain recipes and advice in the kitchen. M’Ledge worked as a switch board operator for GTE and when Verizon bought them out, she worked as an office manager before retiring. She was an outgoing, outspoken spirited lady, who pulled no punches and liked to tell you exactly how it was. She would tell you today, “Don’t grieve for me, I’m better off than you are now.” She was a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church. In addition other parents she was preceded by, her husband, Barnes Edwin Cheek, and two brothers, Joe Bill Altizer and Jack Altizer. Those who remain to carry on her vivacious spirit are: Her sisters: Terri Howery and husband, Rodney of Steelsburg, VA Betty McCall of Fort Worth, TX Brother, Buddy Altizer and wife, Brenda of Pounding Mill, VA Special Nieces who were like her own daughters, Shannon Wess and husband, Kevin of Cedar Bluff, VA ReaAnne Hurley and husband, Josh of Cedar Bluff, VA Special great niece and nephews who were like her grandchildren: Charlee Hurley, Luke Wess and Brody Wess. M’Ledge requested that no services be held and graveside services will be private. She also requested that if you wished to honor her memory, please make donations to the Gethsemane Church Back Pack Program, 2902 Clinch Street, Richlands, VA 24641 so children who are in need could be helped. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
