Marie Davis Counts

Marie Counts, 94, of Richlands, VA passed away on December 18, 2022. Born Ellen Marie Davis on April 22, 1928, in Smyth County, Virginia, to Roberta Troxell Davis and Odell Davis, Marie was the eldest of six siblings. Marie will always be remembered as a loving mother, sister, wife, kind teacher, and generous servant to her family and community. On March 5, 1948, she married Harry Roger Counts (deceased 1997). Of their ten children, six preceded her in death: Harriet Anita, Ellen Juanita, Veda Iris, Roger Lloyd, Randall Stuart, and Mary Anna. Her second husband, Jimmy, also preceded Marie in death in 2018. Siblings that preceded her are Jean Lee, Betty McReynolds, Lloyd Davis, Early Davis, and one grandchild, Sara Counts. She is survived by 4 children Mitchell Counts (Tamina Nunn), Rebecca Kahila, Tony Counts, and Mark Counts (Susan Webb). She is also survived by one beloved sister, Evelyn Dales of Cedar Bluff. 14 grandchildren: Mike and Amy Matney (Veda) Shawn Counts (Roger), Patrick Counts (Mitchell), Cliff and Joe Kahila and Stephanie Kinnan-Young (Rebecca), Emily Chmielewfki (Mary), Nathan and Zack Counts (Tony), Tyler Marshall (Mary), Benjamin, Nick, and Alex Webb Counts (Mark). 14 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren in addition to many nieces and nephews also survive her. Her family would like to thank Shirley Ferrell and Carolyn Green for their steadfast love and gentle care in the last years of Marie’s life. In place of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Buchanan County Public Library 1185 Poe Town Rd., Grundy, VA 24614 in her name. She loved to read and would want to make sure books are available to everyone A funeral service will be held at noon on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Hurst Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Annette Warren officiating. Visitors may call from 11:00 am until the time of service. Marie will be buried alongside Harry and Randy at the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Patrick Counts, Mike Matney, Jerry Counts, Joe Kahila, Cliff Kahila, Shawn Counts, and Nathan Counts.
