Peggy Ann Mercer

Peggy Ann Mercer, age 79, of Cedar Bluff, VA, passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. Peggy was born on November 7, 1943, in Richlands, VA, and was the daughter of the late Colonel Arch Proffitt and Margie Madeleine Sparks Proffitt. She was a retired employee of Clinch Valley Medical having worked in environmental services. Peggy was a homebody and not much for socializing. She loved playing games, interacting with friends on Tik Tok and talking on the phone with family. She was set in her ways, and never worried about what others thought, and when told something, her usual answer was “Oh well”, no matter what the issue was it was the same answer every time. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Shade Mercer; daughter, Patricia Griffith; son, Damon Lester; sisters, Beulah May Meadows, Caroline Proffitt, Gaynell Dye; brothers, Curtis Proffitt, Eugene Proffitt, Jimmie Proffitt; and her best friend, Lucy Reedy. Those left to cherish her memory include: Her Children: David Lester and his wife, Janice, of Raven, VA Frances Rose and her husband, Lee, of Red Ash, VA Hershel “Turkey” Lester of Cedar Bluff, VA Lisa Cordle and her husband, Tom, of Pounding Mill, VA Mary Hutchinson and her husband, Chuck of Cedar Bluff, VA Joe Hurt and his wife, Crystal, of Raven, VA Brothers: Wayne Proffitt and his wife, Rhonda, of Richmond, VA Jackie Proffitt of Savannah, GA David A. Proffitt of Farmville, VA Also surviving are seventeen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and a few great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends. Funeral services for Peggy Ann Mercer will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, July 21, 2023, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA with Wayne Proffitt officiating. Interment will follow. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The Mercer family will receive friends from 6-9 pm on Thursday evening at the funeral home.
