Thomas Clakey Evatt

Thomas Clakey Evatt, age 91, of North Tazewell, Virginia, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2023, in Cedar Bluff, Virginia, at the Commonwealth Assisted Living facility. Thomas was born on December 2, 1931, in Fort Payne, Alabama. He was the son of the late William Clarence Evatt and Nancy Oleva Wootin Evatt. Thomas grew up in Alabama on his parents' farm and was well acquainted with hard labor. Thomas joined the U.S. Army, where he proudly served in the Korean War, and was honored with three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and several others. After moving to the area, Thomas went to work in the coalmines for Jewell Smokeless and worked there until he retired. Thomas was strong as an ox and could build engines, homes, and more. He believed that to learn, you must have someone teach you hands-on to learn. His favorite time was being with his grandchildren and spoiling them. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Josephine Mae Hagy Evatt; two sisters, Velva Evatt Peek and Lester Willodean Evatt Jones; and four brothers, William Clell Evatt; Amos Charles Evatt; Cecil Demovil Evatt, and James Hunley Evatt. Those that remain to carry on his spirit are his: Children: Terry Lee Pruitt and his wife, Linda, of Dublin, VA Thomas Charles Evatt of Huntsville, AL Randy Jo Evatt and his wife, Kathy, of Thompson Valley, VA Jeffrey Scott Evatt and wife, Sonja, of North Tazewell, VA Patricia Lynn Wcislo and her husband, Carl, of North Tazewell, VA Stepson: Kenny Pruitt and wife, Marietta, of Salt Lake City, Utah Sisters: Lona Mae Evatt Charmichael of Macon, GA Rose Evatt Parker of Fyffe, AL Betty Faye Barkley and husband, Jim, of Ft. Payne, AL Brother: Wayne Jerry Evatt and wife, Rebecca, of Ooltewah, TN Seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Thomas Clakey Evatt will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Virginia. The family will begin receiving friends at 12:00 noon on Saturday until the time of service. Entombment will follow at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers. Military rites will conducted by Casey-Shortt VFW Post at the graveside.
