Agnes Underwood Hess

Agnes Underwood Hess, age 77, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at her home after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Hess was born July 16, 1938 in Whitewood, VA and was the daughter of the late Glynn Underwood and Gertie Underwood Laws, both Buchanan County natives. She was a member of Road Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church. She had made her home in the Road Ridge area all her life. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Earl Sterling Hess, Sr; one infant son, Jerry Wayne Hess; brothers, John Henry Underwood, James William “JW” Underwood; and Darrell Thornsberry. She is survived by: Six Daughters: Linda Batten and husband, Larry of Selma, NC Brenda Baker and husband, Gene of Richlands, VA Betty Cook and fiancée, Kenneth Barnett of Raven, VA Lucy Hess and fiancée, Tommy Harrison of the home Marie Hess of the home Vivian Franklin of Baptist Valley, VA Two Sons: Earl S. Hess, Jr. and wife, Gail of Raven, VA Timothy Hess and wife, Lisa of Raven, VA One Sister, Freda Thornsberry Cole of Kingsport, TN Grandchildren: Earl Junior Hess; Charlene Elswick, Christopher Taylor, Aaron Ball, Samantha Patton, Joseph Ball, Timothy (T.J.) Hess, Rachel Hess, Zachary Franklin, and Emily Hess Great Grandchildren: Elliott, Hayden, Lindsey, Colton, Tyler, Bryson, Rylee, Dylan, Alyvia, and Corey Special Sister-in-Law, Mary Jane Richardson A host of family and friends also survive. Special thanks to nurses at MSA Home Health and very special thanks to Pat Riffe. The funeral service for Agnes Underwood Hess will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, VA with Brother Tim Lester and Brother Rick Whitt officiating. Interment will follow at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands. Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers. The Hess family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6-9 pm at the funeral home.
