Alpha Ann "Sally" Mabe Osborne

Alpha Ann “Sally” Mabe Osborne,75, of Swords Creek, VA, passed away May 11th, 2022, at her home following a brief battle of cancer. Sally was the proud mother and grandmother to 3 children and 4 grandchildren. She was born March 23rd, 1947 in Red Ash, VA to the late Ernest and Virgie Mabe. She was raised in Primer Coal Camp before moving to Raven, VA to live with her grandparents. After Sally graduated from Richlands High School in 1965, she began working at the Richlands Farm Bureau. She was a strong, confident, single mother who raised her boys to be respectable men. In 1966, Sally met Whorley for the first time officially in Chicago, IL - 575 miles from their hometown of Raven. Sally and Whorley finally reconnected and have spent the past 44 years jointly raising their children and grandchildren. They’ve enjoyed attending church, planting their garden and flowers, and making memories together. Sally was a devout Christian, her passion and faith for the Lord is what helped her through all the challenging events in her life. She grew up attending Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church. In 1995, she became a member of the First Baptist Church of Honaker, where she was active in the choir, vacation bible school, Women on a Mission, the hospitality committee, and many other events. She and Whorley were currently attending Bethany Baptist Church. Sally loved her family and loved spending time with her kids and grandkids, especially on vacation. One of her favorite hobbies was sitting on the beach, with her toes in the sand and a book in her hand. She loved being surrounded by her extended family, as well. Growing up with 6 siblings and 15 nieces and nephews she always was close with her family. She gained a love for hosting holiday dinners for the entire family from her mother. She strived to continue that tradition after her mother was gone. Sally is preceded in death by her parents, paternal grandparents: Burley and Alpha Mabe (her namesake), maternal grandparents: Harve and Biddie Jackson, 4 brothers: Eugene Wilbur Mabe, James Alfred Mabe, Harold Vernon Mabe, and Curtis Ector Mabe, 6 sisters-in-law: Betty Mabe, Ruby Mabe, Bonnie Mabe, Bea Whited, Shirley Dye, and Betty Osborne, 4 brothers-in-law: Roy Sauls, Herschel Osborne, James Osborne, and Junior Osborne Left to cherish her memory and life: Her husband: Whorley Osborne Her 2 sons: Eric Newberry and fiancé, Alberta Dorton of Swords Creek, VA Ernest Newberry and wife, Debbie of Richlands, VA Her step son: Bradley Osborne and wife Cherie of Lebanon, VA Her 4 grandchildren: Erika Marie Newberry of Christiansburg, VA; Ryan Scott Osborne of Swords Creek, VA; Corey Blake Newberry and fiancé, India Hillman of Abingdon, VA; and Elizabeth Yvonne Newberry of Richlands, VA Her sister: Edith Marie Sauls of Alderson, WV The mother of 3 grandchildren: Terry Newberry of Richlands, VA Her 2 sisters-in-law: Norma Mabe of Richlands, VA Sharon Calhoun Mabe of Upper Marlboro, MD Special Nieces and Nephews: Linda Jessee, Shirley Curry, and Jackie Mabe, who were more like siblings to her. Funeral services for Mrs. Alpha Ann “Sally” Mabe Osborne will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 15, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with Rev. Vonley Pruitt, Rev. Chris Musick, and Rev. Barry Jessee officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memorial Cemetery in Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will be: Eric Newberry, Ernest Newberry, Jeff Sauls, Vincent Whited, Jackie Mabe, Bobby Joe Mabe, Barry Jessee, and Dave Curry. Honorary Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and extended family. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 9:00 pm on Saturday, May 14, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA.
