Betty Jack Sawyers Rasnick

Betty Jack (Sawyers) Rasnick age 88, life long resident of the Richlands area, passed away surrounded by her children at her home on July 16th, 2024. She was born to the late Ernest Sawyers and Bonnie (Williams) Sawyers of Mouthcard, KY. After graduating Feds Creek High School in 1954, she attended Pikeville College to study teaching. During this time, she met the love of her life, Jim Rasnick at a youth group meeting at Steelsburg Methodist Church. After Jim’s service in the Air Force, they were married and made their home in the Richlands area for over 60 years. She had a passion for teaching young children, and taught in Tazewell County Public Schools for eleven years and private pre-school at Richlands Presbyterian Church for 29 years. She was involved in several civic and church organizations to include First United Methodist Women, the Josephine White Circle and served in her later years as a volunteer at Clinch Valley Medical Center. Betty was a beloved member of her community. Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Bonnie Sawyers, and her beloved husband, James W. Rasnick, Jr. Betty is survived by her children: Son, Pete Rasnick, and his wife Jill of Collierville, TN. Son, Ernie Rasnick, and his wife Beth of Richlands, VA. Daughter, Melissa Pace, and his husband David of Cumming, GA. Seven Grandchildren: Andrew Rasnick, Krista Tiller, Kim Meeker, Emily Promisel, John Rasnick, Carleigh Shepard, and Christian Shepard. Seven Great Grandchildren: Madelyn Tiller, Walker Promisel, Sophia Rasnick, Jack Meeker, Quinn Meeker, Nora Meeker, and Ashton Promisel. Three brothers: Bill Sawyers, Tex Sawyers, and Rick Sawyers The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Betty’s wonderful neighbors, friends, caregivers, and family who have been assisting her. A special thanks to the nurses and staff at Legacy Hospice and Palliative Care. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Michelle Harmon Scholarship at Richlands First Methodist Church. The funeral service for Betty Rasnick will be conducted Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Devin Schultz officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers are Pete Rasnick, Ernie Rasnick, Michael Tiller, John Rasnick, Ricky Sawyers, David Pace, Christian Shepard, and Doug Lawson. The family will receive friends on Saturday beginning at noon until the time of the service.
