Brittain Russ

William Brittain Russ, age 77, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2016. He was born in Tazewell County and was the son of the late Raymond and Cora Fletcher Russ. Brittain served our country in the United States Air Force for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant in 1976. Serving during the Vietnam era, he was awarded several Commendation Medals as well as the Bronze Star. Upon retiring from the Air Force, he then worked for Enron Corporation and The Boeing Company, achieving full time retirement at the age of 67. Brittain resided in Richlands, Virginia for the last 11 years, where he was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was an accomplished musician and loved to sing, play his guitar and “jam” with a multitude of special friends that shared his love of sharing music with others. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 45 years, Nancy Russ; one daughter, Lana Kay Spann; sister, Lydia Marie Stallings; and one brother, Jimmy Russ. Survivors are: Wife of 11 years: Priscilla Mullen Altizer Russ Daughter: Kellie White and husband, James of Tulsa, Oklahoma Son: Michael Lee Russ of Waskom, Texas Step Sons: Joey Altizer and wife, Tracy of Blacksburg, VA John Altizer and wife, Oyuna of Coloane, Macao Jeremy Wade Altizer of Richlands, VA Sisters: Peggy McGhee of Atlanta, GA Carol Damron of Tazewell, VA Brothers: Gordon Russ and wife, Shirley of Richlands, VA Willie Haven Russ and wife, Darlene of Oakwood, VA Eddie Russ and wife, Karon of Claypool Hill, VA Junior Russ and wife, Ruth of Martinsville, VA Seven grandchildren, six step grandchildren, and several great grandchildren also survive. Memorial services for William Brittain Russ will be conducted Thursday, March 17, 2016 at 7pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Larry Ramey and Rev. Betzy C. Elifrits Warren officiating. Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 will conduct military services. Friends may call from 5pm until 7pm Thursday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA.
