Cecil Gilbert

Cecil Perry Gilbert, age 78, of Jewell Ridge, Virginia passed away Friday, March 11, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Tazewell County and was the son of the late Clarence P. and Cloie Belle Arnold Gilbert. He was a retired coal miner from Piston Coal and was a member of the UMWA Post# 7372 of Jewell Ridge, Virginia. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a lifetime resident of this area. Cecil loved riding his motorcycle, he was a dedicated rider come rain or shine, cold or warm weather. He was a dedicated husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, his family and friends will truly miss him. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Gilbert, and Freddie Gilbert. Those who remain to carry on his spirit are: His loving wife of 40 years, Dorothy Lankford Gilbert of Jewell Ridge, VA Daughters: Rhonda Compton and husband Randy of Wytheville, VA Cindy White and husband Wesley of Basset, VA Sons: Daniel Gilbert and wife Teena of Jewell Ridge, VA Robert “Bobbie” Gilbert and wife Sharon Jewell Ridge, VA Dean Gilbert of Wytheville, VA Sister, Judy Vencill of Thompson Valley, VA Brothers: Rufus Gilbert of Murray Holler near Jewell Ridge, VA David Gilbert of New Market, Tennessee Wayne Gilbert of Jewell Ridge, VA Six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends also survive him. Funeral services for Cecil Gilbert will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, March 14, 2011 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev.’s Joe Horn and John Baldwin officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers. Graveside military services will performed by the Casey-Shortt VFW Post# 9640. Friends may call from 6-9 pm on Sunday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
