Daniel Wayne Justus, Sr., age 65, of Raven, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2026, in a Bristol, Tennessee, hospital following a brief illness. Born in Welch, West Virginia, Daniel was the son of the late Aldie Justus and Martha Arnold Justus. He spent many years working as a dedicated coal miner for Jewell Smokeless. Known for his incredible work ethic, Daniel was a profoundly hardworking man who poured his heart into everything he did. Above all, Daniel was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend. He truly possessed a heart of gold, always putting others first and selflessly helping anyone in need. Outside of his work and family, Daniel had a deep love for animals, especially his cherished dogs and cats. He found great joy in the simple pleasures of life, spending his favorite hours tending to his garden and tinkering with vehicles. In addition to his parents, Daniel was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda Justus; his beloved son, Daniel Wayne “D.J.” Justus, II; and his siblings, Margaret Ann Justice, Pearlie Justice, Adam Justice, and Johnny Justice. Those who remain to carry on his generous spirit include his wife, Susie Mayhorn Justus of Raven, VA. His daughters, Sharon Lester and her husband Jimmy of Raven, VA, and Amanda “Mandy” Dye and her husband Glen of Tazewell, VA. His sisters, Judy Hicks and her husband Harold of Indiana, Mary Jane Justice Walker and her husband Paul of Ohio, and Eve Asbury and her husband Eddie of Beckley, WV. His brothers, Billy Ray Justus and his wife Marie of Raysal, WV, Jerry Justice and his companion Dolly of Stuart, VA, Olin “Bombo” Justice and his wife Leasa of Bartley, WV, and Aldie Junior Justus and his wife Phyllis of Grundy, VA He also leaves behind his adoring grandchildren, Della Barrett and her husband Ben of Honaker, VA, and Christopher Dye and his wife Vanessa of Bristol, TN, along with a host of extended family members and dear friends. A funeral service for Daniel Justice will take place at 12:00 PM on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia, with the Rev. Dannie Short and Seth Burke officiating. Interment will follow at the Hankins Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia. Serving as pallbearers will be Olin Justice, Jerry Justice, Jimmy Lester, Eric Rose, Greg Buress, Christopher Dye, Junior Justice, Ben Barrett, and Eddie Asbury. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 AM until the time of the service at 12:00 PM on Friday at the funeral home.
