David Robert Stanton Jr.

David Robert Stanton Jr, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, passed away February 16, 2023, in Richlands, Virginia surrounded by his family who loved him dearly, after a brave battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Dr. David Robert and Syble Mercedes Davidson Stanton. David was born in Richlands, Virginia on June 19, 1957. He graduated from Richlands High School and then received his degree from the University of Tennessee. He returned home to help run the business founded by his grandfather, Virginian Metal Products and Southwestern Supply Company. He was the President and CEO of Virginian Metal/Southwestern Supply until 2007, upon his retirement. He and Valerie married on June 19, 1987, and raised their three children in Cedar Bluff, next door to his parents in the neighborhood he grew up in and loved. David was fiercely protective of his family and friends. An avid researcher, he was constantly looking for the next piece of information that would give those he cared about a leg up. A loyal father and “Chief,” as he was affectionately known by his grandchildren, he was their first call when they had a problem or needed advice. He was extremely proud of his garden, always planted way more than he needed, and loved giving friends and family a sack full of vegetables. He was happiest when his grandchildren joined him in his garden, soaking up his lifelong knowledge. His favorite memories with friends were his ski trips out west, playing golf, fishing, and duck hunts, and he loved to reminisce about them. He loved coaching his children’s youth teams and always made sure they had everything they needed to succeed. He never met a bird dog he did not like, and Pearl and Addie were always by his side. He never took a serious picture, and he was famous for his distinctive sense of humor. He will be deeply missed, and his legacy will be carried on forever. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Valerie Breeden Stanton; his children Rachel Stanton Wells and husband Thad of Morristown, TN; David “Rob” Stanton III and wife Kirby of Bristol, TN; and John Harper Stanton of Abingdon, VA. “Chief” was also a devoted grandfather to four grandchildren: Thaddeus “Stanton” Wells, Hankins Edward Wells, Elliott Louise “Lottie” Wells, and Mary Syble “Sibbie” Wells of Morristown, TN. He was also survived by his two sisters, Susan Osborne and husband Lee, of Roanoke, VA; Diane Tolley and husband Dan of Purcellville, VA; mother and father-in-law Jack and Eunice Breeden of Richlands, VA; and brother and sister-in-law Dr. Robert and Lisa Weinacker of Mobile, AL. David was a proud uncle of many and loved his nieces and nephews and they loved him. The family cannot find words to express their gratitude for his care from Dr. Robert Weinacker, Dr. Kenneth McVey, Dr. David Thompson, Dr. Fady Tawadros, and so many unbelievably caring nurses and staff at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, VA, and Urology & Oncology Specialists PC in Mobile, AL. Thank you to all the amazing friends and family who provided overwhelming love and support during his illness. Their compassion meant more than they could ever know. Memorial services for David Stanton will be conducted Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 1 pm at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home, 1401 Second Street, Richlands, Virginia with Pastor Craig Barber officiating. Friends may call from 11 am until 1 pm at the funeral home prior to the service.
