Douglas Shepherd

Douglas Shepherd, age 73, of Honaker, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 10, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Grundy, Virginia on February 24, 1951 to the late James Zed Shepherd and Nevada Lowe Shepherd. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local #1640 for 52 years and worked as an underground coal miner for 30 years. He served as a member of the UMWA District 17 Sub-28 Chaplain Corps and was also a member of the Drill Community Senior Citizens Group. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was always eager to share the incredible vegetables from his garden each year. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Edward Shepherd; two sisters, Phyllis Lester and Lois Israel; and his lifetime best friend, Harold Dean Thomas. Survivors are: Daughter: Cindy Crabtree and husband, Josh of Elk Garden, Virginia Son: Jeremy Shepherd of Clarksville, Tennessee Two Grandchildren that he loved dearly: Parker and Ellie Jo Three Sisters: Brenda Baldwin of Church Hill, TN; Barbara Ray of Drill, VA; and Jennifer Roark and husband, Ricky of Rosedale, VA Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Douglas Shepherd will be conducted Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 1pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with Wayne Baldwin and Chester Ball officiating. Burial will follow at the Shepherd Family Cemetery in Honaker, Virginia. Pallbearers will be: Parker Blankenship, Ricky Roark, Jason Thomas, Stevie Thomas, Ricky Thomas, Willie Rose, Kent Osborne, Bruce Baldwin, Don Hess, Dwayne Barton, Kody Barton, Patrick Kiser, LeeRoy Ball, and Greg Noe. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Members of the UMWA District 17 Sub-28 Chaplain Corps as they will conduct UMWA honors prior to the service on Saturday. Friends may visit with the family from 6pm until 9pm on Friday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
