Mr. Gene E. Cox age 71 , of Cedar Bluff, Virginia passed away, Friday, December 11, 2009 following a brief illness. He was born in Russell County, VA and was the son of the late Charlie and Hazel Sword Cox. Gene was a loving husband, father and grandfather, a volunteer with the Food Pantry in Richlands, and a former deacon and choir member of the Gethsemane Baptist Church. He had a passion for life and loved to hunt in his younger years and every opportunity he had he would go fishing or golfing. He loved to cook, to whip up a meal and watch his family and friends enjoy eating and being together. As a jack of all trades he loved to fix things and work with computers, he was a retired office worker from Jewell Smokeless Coal Company. Gene had spent most of his life here in Tazewell County and always tried to give back to the community with his service to others, he will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. Those who remain to carry on his spirit are his Loving wife, Mary Sue Cox of Cedar Bluff, VA His daughters: Connie Getz of Roanoke, VA Gina Lucas and husband Jeffrey of Landenberg, PA Sister, Jane Ann White and husband Phil of Morgantown, WV His Grandchildren whom he dearly loved, Robby Getz, Thea Lucas and Victoria Lucas also survive him along with a host of friends and family. Funeral services for Gene Cox will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands, VA with the Rev. James Denton officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, VA. Friends and family will sever as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations to made to Gethsemane Baptist Church to use for community service. Friends may call from 6:00 pm to 9:00pm on Monday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA. The family would like to invite all who attend the funeral to join them after the grave service at Gethsemane Church to partake in the hospitality provided by the church.
