George Hess

George Peery Hess, age 88, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away Thursday, December 2, 2010 in a Richlands, Virginia hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Alfredton, Virginia and was the son of the late James Arthur and Nora Mae Horton Hess. He was a lifelong resident of the Big Creek section of Richlands, Virginia and was a retired Foreman and Safety Director from Pittston Coal Company where he was a member of the Mine Rescue Team. He attended Richlands High School, served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and was a corporal in the U.S. Army. He was a World War II Veteran and was a member of the 69th Infantry having participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church and attended the West Fork Presbyterian Chapel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Stevens and Nanola Hess; three brothers, James Arthur Jr., John Marvin, and Howard Hess; nephew, Bill Hess, Jr.; and two brothers in law, James M. Hurt, Sr. and Garrett Stevens. Survivors are: Two Sisters: Helen Hess of Richlands, Virginia with whom he made his home Jane Hurt of Richlands, Virginia Two Brothers: Bill Hess and wife, Clara of Richlands, Virginia Harry Hess and wife, Peggy of Richlands, Virginia Sister in Law: Katherine Hess of Richlands, Virginia Nieces and Nephews: Dr. Nora Constance Hurt Holland and husband, Robert of Smyrna, Georgia; James M. Hurt, II and wife, Kim of Rosedale, Virginia; Judith Jones and husband, Roy of Blacksburg, Virginia; Linda McGlothlin of Richlands, Virginia; Martha Jessee and husband, Jeff of Claypool Hill, Virginia; and John Hess and wife, Vicki of Richlands, Virginia. Great Nieces and Nephews: Lauren Hurt, Matthew Hurt, Robert James Peery Holland, Britt Ravenburg, Heather McGlothlin, Chelle Carini, Ingrid Baker, Katherine Jones, Brady Hess, and Marcus Jessee. Funeral services for George Peery Hess will be conducted Sunday, December 5, 2010 at 2:00pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Carl Howell and Rev. Dennis Hoffman officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be: James M. Hurt, II, Robert Holland, Wayne Lester, Bob Lester, Mike Hickman, Mike Stump, Brady Hess, John Hess, Marcus Jessee, Roy Jones, and Jeff Jessee.
