Gladys Davis Jewell

Gladys Davis Jewell, of Pounding Mill, Virginia, left this life Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the home of her daughter in Hiwassee, Virginia. She was born in Richlands, Virginia in 1922 and was the daughter of the late Thomas A. Davis and Carrie Belle Jackson Davis. She had lived most of her life in the Buchanan and Tazewell County areas. Gladys attended Richlands High School. Gladys in known at Vansant Baptist Church for teaching Jr. Girls in Sunday School many years, singing in the choir and directing the Christmas Play. After moving back to Tazewell County, she was active in the Gethsemane Baptist Church making many of the beautiful banners used in the ministry. She was active in the Steelsburg Homemakers Club and coordinated the national meet at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Her passion was making and teaching quilting. Many will remember her beautiful quilts. Her other passion was flowers! She was a flower enthusiast spending her whole life surrounded by many varieties. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Jewell; one son, Robert M. Jewell, Jr.; sisters, Elizabeth Davis and Ruth Davis Clark; and brothers, Earnel Davis (Laura); Cecil Davis, Carl A. Davis (Lillian), Robert P. Davis. Survivors are: Daughter: Carol Jewell Yates and husband, William of Hiwassee, Virginia Three Grandchildren: Gladys Louise Yates and husband, Jack Phillips of Midlothian, Virginia Master Chief Robert Morgan Yates and wife, Christine of Roanoke, Virginia Misty Jewell and husband, Ron Orringer of Kelso, Washington Six Great Grandchildren: Emily Morgan Yates of Longwood, Virginia; Caroline McKinley Yates of Roanoke, Virginia; McKina Orringer of Kelso, WA; Joshua Phillips, Jacob Phillips, and Lauren Phillips of Midlothian, Virginia Daughter in Law: Donna Jewell of Washington Sisters In Law: Mary Ruth Davis and Faye Davis Neel Many nieces, nephews, church family, quilt family, homemakers family, neighbors and friends also survive. Graveside services for Gladys D. Jewell will be conducted Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 11:00am at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum #4 in Claypool Hill, Virginia with the Rev. Marc Brooks and Rev. Stafford Compton officiating. Interment will follow.
