Gordon Russ

Robert Gordon Russ, age 81, of Richlands, VA, passed away on Friday, January 31, 2025 at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, KY following a lengthy illness. He was born on July 17, 1943 and the was the son of the late Raymond “Shorty” Russ and Cora Fletcher Russ of Jewell Ridge, VA. He was a lifelong resident of Richlands, VA. He served 3 ½ years in the US Army and received a honorable discharge. He was a coal miner for nearly 40 years. He was one of the founders of the Jewell Ridge Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Chief. He was a lifelong member of Richlands Fire and Rescue having been a member over 50 years. He served 43 years as Captain. He was a hard worker and loved to serve his community. Gordon was preceded in death by one daughter, Peggy Russ Smith, 3 brothers (Brittain, Jimmy and Bill), 1 sister (Marie “Tootie” Stallings) Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years, Shirley Russ. One daughter, Kim Lowe and husband Kevin of Richlands. Daughter of the heart, Marcella Keene. Grandchildren – Kristen Danielle Street of Charleston, WV, Savannah Danille Blevins and husband Mitchell of Elizabethton, TN, Keaton Tyler Lowe and wife Taylor of Richlands VA. Great Grandchildren Brayden and Madelyn Blevins and Easton Lowe. Sisters – Peggy McGhee of Powder Springs GA, Carol Damron of Tazewell VA. Brothers – Eddie Russ and wife Karon of Pounding Mill VA and Junior Russ and wife Ruth of Collinsville VA. Loving friends, Jennings Yates and Bill Patton and his beloved dog, Daisy. Several nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends. Funeral services for Robert Gordon Russ will be conducted Monday, February 3, 2025 at 11:00am at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Clarence Lowe officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be: Members of Richlands Rescue Squad. Honorary Pallbearers: Kevin Lowe, Keaton Lowe, Jamie Hurt, Dalton Hurt, Jennings Yates and Bill Patton. Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may visit with the family from 6pm until 8pm on Sunday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
