Harold Daniel Cantrell

Harold Daniel Cantrell, age 75, of Jewell Ridge, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at his home. Harold was born on February 14, 1949 in Whitewood, Virginia and was the son of the late Henry Cantrell and Thelma Bernice Cordle Cantrell. He served his country in the US Army and worked for Island Creek Coal Company until he retired. He lived all his life in the Jewell Ridge area. He was an avid hunter and fisherman; he enjoyed going to flea markets and finding many treasurers. Harold was a natural born comedian and could always make people smile. He was a youth leader at church for many years, was a deacon, and a Sunday school superintendent of the Shelter Freewill Baptist Church in Jewell Valley where he was a member. He coached many softball and baseball players throughout the years, coaching both little league and senior league. He was an avid L.A. Dodgers Fan. He was very passionate in what he believed in. Harold was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Dillon Cantrell, and a brother, Harvey Cantrell. He is survived by: His loving wife, of 53 years, Diana Keene Cantrell Daughters: Carol Ann Cantrell of Jewell Ridge, Virginia Annette Horn and husband, Lance of Jewell Ridge, Virginia Son: Daniel Cantrell and companion, Heather Street of Jewell Ridge, Virginia Sisters: Sue Hughes of Dayton, Ohio Ellen Horn and companion, Mike Brizendine of New Castle, Virginia Evelyn Perkins and husband, Danny of Swords Creek, Virginia Brother, Don Ray Cantrell of Tallahassee, Florida Grandchildren: Tyler Griffith, Makynzee Cantrell, Colton Horn, Madison Cantrell, Shylah Cantrell, Sierra Cantrell, Gideon Horn, Ethan Cantrell, Great-Grandchildren Blakely Hess, Carter VanHoozer, Vada VanHoozer. Several family and friends also survive. Funeral services for Harold Daniel Cantrell will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia with Minister Columbus Baker, Jr. and Pastor Earl Cole officiating. Interment will follow at Henry Cantrell Cemetery on Brown Mountain, near Jewell Ridge, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Perry Clifton, Brian Ward, Donald Ward, Scott Dye, Bradley Lawson, Rickey Horn, Matt Rife, Darrell Clifton and Rocky Cole. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jackie Boyd, Albert Horn, Shannon Lambert, Dr. Kabaria, and all former softball and baseball players he had coached. The Cantrell family will receive friends from 6-9 pm on Saturday evening at the funeral home. The Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 will conduct military rites. The UMWA will conduct a memorial service.
