Harold Vernon Mabe

Harold Vernon Mabe, 79 of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, passed away Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Georgetown University Hospital in the presence of family from natural causes. Harold was born at home in Red Ash, Virginia on May 10, 1942 to Virgie Jackson and Ernest Mabe. Harold was raised in a coal mining family and after graduating from Richlands High School in 1961 he relocated to Maryland. Harold was a proud Prince George’s County Police Officer from 1965 to 1983, finishing his career as an Evidence Detective in the Rape and Homicide Division. In his later years Hal, as his wife lovingly referred to him, enjoyed spending time bird watching, garden sitting and helping Sharon make her beautiful stained glass creations. Harold had a love of music and dancing, a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Virgie and Ernest, brother’s Gene, Alfred and Curtis Mabe, daughter Angela Marie and his second wife Bonnie Burton Mabe. Harold had a large loving family that included his wife Sharon Calhoun of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, two sisters Edith Sauls and husband Roy (deceased), Sally Osborne and husband Worley. Two daughters Ann Cauffman and husband Chip, Sherry Mabe and husband David, with his first wife Barbara Hess Claypool. He also had two children by marriage with Sharon, Christopher Calhoun and wife Donna, Merle Calhoun (deceased) and wife Ruth (deceased). Harold had 11 grandchildren; Scott, Jessica, Sarah, Emilee, Daniel, Rose, and grandchildren with Sharon, Jennifer, Shannon, Wes, James and Michael. Harold also had 11 great grandchildren, Hannah, Jacob, Gavin, Bailey, Noah, Annabelle, Xander, Evan, Layla, Eli and Finley. We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to Denise Mackall for the friendship, kindness and care she has given to Hal and Sharon over the last almost seven years. Her loving care was an unexpected comfort to us all. Her compassion and respect showed in her work always. The family will be having a celebration of life service later this year. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY, 10306, 718-987-1931 in Harold’s name.
