Harold James Steffey, Jr.

Harold James Steffey, Jr., of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, passed away on Monday, March 24, 2025. Harold was born on October 16, 1948, in Castlewood, Virginia, and was the son of the late Harold J. Steffey, Sr. and Lutie Alice Bailey Steffey. Harold Steffey entered the U.S. Army in 1969 and was stationed in Vietnam by July of that year. He served in the 4th Infantry Division as an M-60 Machine Gunner in the Central Highlands of Vietnam and received many medals for his valor and bravery. He was honorably discharged on February 1st, 1975. Afterwards, he worked for various coal companies for 34 years. Harold was of the Christian faith, who for a number of years, served in several different roles in Layman’s Chapel Church of Richlands, inspiring many and leaving a rich deposit of precious memories in the memory banks of those who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a younger sister, Mary Steffey. He is survived by: Two Sons: James Steffey and wife, Tina of Belfast, VA Billy Steffey of Bristol, VA Three Grandchildren: Kassidy Steffey Warren and husband, Justin of Lebanon, VA Nicholas Steffey and wife, Selena of Bristol, VA Ryan Lester of Belfast, VA Three Great Grandchildren: Layla, Ryker, and Salem Steffey Sister, Lutie Faye Stipes and her late husband, Bob Stipes of Griffen, GA Also surviving are several other relatives that were deeply cherished. Throughout the years, the actions of his life truly lived out the words of Jesus in Matthew 23:11: “But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.” From a servant’s heart, many lives were touched by the kind of words and kind actions that showed up in the person of Harold Steffey. Funeral services for Harold James Steffey, Jr. will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 4, 2025, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with Rev. Doug Allen officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens, at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Ryan Lester, Justin Warren, Nicholas Steffey, Marvin Adkins, Greg Newberry, and Aaron Christian. The members of the VFW Post #9640 will conduct military graveside rites. The Steffey family will receive friends starting at 12 pm until the time of the service.
