Helen Fields

Ms. Helen Faye Sutherland Fields, age 71 of Baptist Valley, Virginia fought a long hard battle with cancer up until 11:56 am, Saturday, November 19, 2011, she never admitted defeat. Helen was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Otis Greer and Ossie Mae Powers Sutherland, former Tazewell county natives. She was a fulltime homemaker most of her life, she loved to care for her family and fuss over their well being. If you wanted a good breakfast, everyone knew Helen would be fixing a large breakfast every morning, it was her favorite meal. She was an outgoing person, quick to smile, and always full of joy, especially when doing her gardening in her flowers or dusting her many keepsakes and collections. Helen loved country music especially Hank Williams, Jr., She was a caring, giving person who would always lend a helping hand, was of the Christian faith and a lifetime resident of the area. Her hidden pleasure was hiding, so she could pop out and scare someone, she would laugh with such merriment at your reaction. Helen started battling cancer over 10 years ago; she was determined to enjoy life to its fullest and to remember that the most important thing in illness is never to lose heart, for it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles Fields; one son, Ricky Fields; sister, Nellie McCall and two brothers, Herbert and Elmer Sutherland. Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: Her daughters: Kathy Charles and husband Walter of Baptist Valley, VA Brenda Smith and husband Michael of Baptist Valley, VA Mary Sutherland and husband Junior of Baptist Valley, VA Sons: Wayne Fields of Wise, VA Jamie Fields of Pulaski, VA Jeff Fields and wife Carolyn of Baptist Valley, VA Sisters, Gladys Howington and Nancy Sutherland both of Baptist Valley, VA Brother, Leroy Sutherland of Baptist Valley, VA Special caregivers, Legacy Hospice, Richlands Home Care and Community Home Health. Eight grandchildren also survive along with several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services for Helen Fields will be conducted at 11:00 am, Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Chuck Patterson officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, VA. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Legacy Hospice of 1963 Second Street, Richlands, Virginia 24641.
