Jack Shelton

Mr. Jack Charles Shelton, age 60, of North Tazewell, VA and passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2009 in a Richmond, Virginia hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Richlands, VA and was the son of William Wesley and Dorthea Dowdy Shelton whom live in the Middle Creek area of Cedar Bluff, VA. Jack was a lifetime resident of the Richlands area and a graduate of Richlands High School Class of 1967. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict, returned home, traded in his guns for a light and hat and went underground into the coal mines. He was an underground electrician for Sea-Board Mining on Jewell Ridge and then for Pittston Coal Company before becoming disabled. Jack was an avid fisherman and enjoyed a good hunting trip, He collected guns and knives and was always on the outlook for a good trade. He loved to play pool and could shark the best of them. He was very talented in woodworking and could make many beautiful items. He was an accomplished welder and enjoyed molding and twisting items into works of art. Jack was a member of the local UMWA and of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post# 9640. He was also a licensed airplane pilot and loved to fly, and now he has taken his final flight, he will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Arvil Shelton and William Daniel Shelton. In addition to his parents he is survived by: His special companion: Cathy Price of N. Tazewell, VA Rhonda Justice of N. Tazewell, VA Grandchildren: Jacob Shelton, Austin Reynolds and Shyanne Reynolds Step-grandchildren: Nathan and Derek Sparks, Brooke Lowe, Dustin Wingo, Chase Helbert and Courtney Taylor Funeral services for Jack Shelton will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, VA with the Pastor Jonah Sparks officiating. Entombment will follow at the Clinch Valley Memorial Mausoleum in Richlands, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
