James Norman Shortt

James Norman Shortt, age 69, of Richlands, VA, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025 at a Salem, VA hospital surrounded by loved ones. James was born on August 24, 1955 in Richlands, VA to the late Mervin B. Shortt and Pauline Ball Shortt. James graduated from Richlands High School in 1974. He was a resident of the Richlands area for most of his life. He was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt and be outdoors. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by companion, April Shortt; and 6 brothers; Steven “Sandy” Brewer, Joseph Shortt, Jerry Shortt, Dennis Shortt, Jack Shortt, and Richard Shortt. James is survived by: Daughters: Buffy Sargent of Richlands, VA Melesia Pendergrass and husband, David of Tazewell, VA Shana Shortt and fiancée, Dustin of Richlands, VA Step-Daughter, Jessica Casey of Honaker, VA Grandchildren: Haley Stacy and husband, Ryan Michael Sargent and fiancée, Tiffany Dupree Lilly Casey Great-Grandchildren: Rayden Dupree, Gracie Sargent, Carson Stacy, and Carter Stacy Sisters: Iris Webb of Raven, VA Mary Shook and husband Rick of Hickory, NC Brother, Eric Shortt and wife, Donna of Richlands, VA Special thanks to Logan Marshall at the Clinch Valley Medical Center infusion center. Funeral services for James Norman Shortt will be conducted Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 2:00 pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Roger Shook officiating. Interment will follow at the Shortt Family Cemetery on Horton Ridge, near Raven, VA. Pallbearers will be: D.J. Pendergrass, Michael Sargent, Matthew Webb, Ryan Stacy, Tim Shortt, Dennis Shortt, Dustin Coe, and Jason Shook. Honorary pallbearers will be: Carson Stacy, Carter Stacy, Dicky Vandyke, Joe Shortt, Doug Ray, Joshua Shortt, and Steve Shortt. UMWA Honors will be conducted prior to the service on Saturday by the Sub-28 Chaplain Corp. The Shortt family will receive friends from 12-2 pm on Saturday prior to the funeral.
