Janice Marie Fox Crawford, age 74 of Tazewell, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, March 20, 2026. Born in Tazewell on April 3, 1951, she was the daughter of the late Gratton Columbus Fox, Sr. and Irebel Cornwell Fox. Janice was a woman of vibrant character— Now, let’s be honest—because Janice would be the first to tell you herself—she wasn't always the easiest person to nudge. She was strong-willed. She was "spicy." She could be a little hard-headed and, at times, a bit temperamental. But every bit of that fire came from a place of fierce, uncompromising love. If you were hers, she would sacrifice every single thing she had for you. She was strong-willed, spicy, and admittedly a bit hard-headed and temperamental. Yet, beneath that spirited exterior was a heart of pure gold. Whether she was working hard as a CNA in our local nursing homes or holding down the fort at home, Janice was a force of nature. She was our family prankster, she was the one who could make you laugh until you cried, usually while she was sitting in her favorite spot with the Game Show Network on or a Clint Eastwood movie playing in the background. She was the woman who could be easily bribed with a cold Pepsi and a piece of chocolate, but who would also spend hours in the kitchen making those legendary fried apple pies—the kind that tasted like home and smelled like love. To her children, Tammy and Rebecca, she was "the best." To her brothers, her grandkids, and her great-grandkids, she was the anchor. Even her sweet dog, Jaxx, knew that in Janice’s house, you were loved, you were fed, and you were protected. Janice, thank you for the laughs, the pies, and the lessons in being proud of exactly who you are. We’ll keep the Pepsi cold and the memories of your "spicy" spirit alive in our hearts forever. She joins her parents, her sister Mildred Chapman, and her brother Edward Fox now. And while she might be giving them a little bit of a hard time up there already, we know she’s finally at peace. She leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter through her survivors: her children, Tammy M. Crawford of Tazewell, VA, and Rebecca A. Hayden of North Tazewell, VA; her brothers, Gratton Fox of Springville, VA, and Freddie Rose of Washington, D.C.; and her beloved canine companion, Jaxx. She was the proud grandmother of Jess Moore, Chris "JR" Hayden, Conner Hayden, Nikki Moore, Kyrie Hayden, Abby Crawford, and Kansas Crawford. Her spark lives on in her great-grandchildren: Waylon McGlothlin, Lincoln Remines, Rylee Furches, and Bryson Bogle. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions toward funeral expenses be made to Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Tazewell, VA. A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date.
