John Jay Flanner

Wardell, VA – John “Jay” Flanner, age 91 went to be with the Lord on July 18, 2020 while surrounded by his family. Jay was a graduate of Richlands High School and served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon leaving the Army, he was transferred to the Army Reserves. During his life, Jay was employed by Greyhound Bus, and later retired as an electrician from Clinchfield Coal Company. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge and the Kazim Shriners of Virginia. He was also a member of the UMWA. Jay was of the Baptist Faith and his hobbies were restoring vehicles and hunting. In addition to his parents and step-father, Jay was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Harris Flanner; son, John Jay Flanner, Jr.; brother, Ralph W. White and infant sister, Diana L. White. Survivors include his: Sons: Larry D. Flanner and wife, Joyce “Susie” of Tazewell, VA Gary K. Flanner and wife, Kathy of Prestonsburg, KY John W. Jewell and wife, Sandy of Monroe, MI Daughters: Debra “Denise” St. Clair and husband, Dr. Thomas St. Clair of Bastian, VA Donna S. Flanner of Bluefield, VA Grandchildren, Kevin Flanner, Brandon Flanner, Rachael Downard, Nikki Luttrell, Denise Jewell and Tammy Everson. Sisters, Shirley Carter and husband, Les of Bedford, TX Nona Buskill of Richlands, VA Also surviving are several great grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and special friends, Jerry and Anita Goss. The family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to AeroCare and Legacy Hospice for the wonderful services provided to Jay during his illness. The funeral service for John J. Flanner will be conducted at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Randy Taylor officiating. A Masonic service will be conducted at the beginning of the funeral service. Interment will follow on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at 11:00 am at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, VA. Family will serve as pallbearers. The VFW Post# 9640 will conduct military graveside rites.
