John David Smith

John David Smith, age 92 of Raven, VA, formerly of the Bandy/Dry Fork area of Tazewell County, VA, died Wednesday, May 27, 2020, at his daughter’s home. He was born April 22, 1928, in Pikeville, KY and was a son of the late Roland Turner Smith and Ida Lily Swiney-Smith. John was a retired coal miner and was a member of the UMWA Local #6025 in Bishop, VA. Mr. Smith was a United States Army Veteran, serving our country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He liked to do woodworking, playing an assortment of musical instruments, and was an avid golfer. His passion was serving the Lord, which he did for many years. He served as an assistant pastor for a Freewill Baptist church in his community and was affiliated with many churches in Tazewell County, VA; he attended Linkous Chapel in the Dry Fork community. John had long-term ministries at the local jail and Tazewell Heritage Hall. John enjoyed his time with his Lord as he studied the Bible. He and Henry C. Smith were twins and he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Sue Mullins-Smith; four sisters, Wanda Lea Stevenson, Ruby Holland, Paula Smith and Mary Smith; five brothers, Henry C. Smith, Harvey Earl Smith, Jack Smith, Leroy Smith and William “Bill” Smith; and one grandson, Scotty. Those who survive to cherish his memory include, two daughters, Sabaraina Ball and husband, Keith of Raven, VA and Brenda Huffman of Winchester, VA; two sons, Lester Brewer and wife, Michelle of Colonial Heights, and Darrell Charles and wife, Dawn of Pikeville, KY; five grandchildren, Jason Keith Ball, Joshua Cody Ball and wife, Samantha both of Raven, VA, Jonathon Tyler Ball of Wardell, VA, Bryan Brewer and his companion, Alicia Minor of Colonial Heights, VA and Katlin Charles of Pikeville, KY; three great-grandchildren, Dakota Keith Ball, Elliot Wilder Ball and Nora Remington “Remi” Brewer; special caregivers, Hope Coleman and Patsy Byrd. A host of nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends also survive. Graveside Funeral Service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2020 at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, VA with the Rev. Jonah Sparks and Brother Larry Junior Mullins officiating. Burial will follow. Pallbearers will be Jason Ball, Joshua Ball, Keith Ball, Jonathon Ball, Bryan Brewer, Jerry Mullins and Brayden Patrick; honorary pallbearer will be Larry D. Mullins. The family will meet at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Tazewell, VA an hour before the graveside service on Saturday, May 30, 2020. Those wishing to travel in procession with the family are asked to meet at the funeral home during that time. In compliance with the COVID-19 / Corona Virus order of Governor Northam, social distancing must be observed during the graveside service and protective masks are optional.
