Johnny Groves Tizen, age 71, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2014. He was surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. He was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the son of the late John B. and Madeline Groves Tizen of Tazewell County, Virginia. He was a beloved father, brother, grandfather, uncle, fraternity brother, and friend. Johnny will always be remembered for his positive attitude, witty sense of humor, and his love for Virginia Tech. He fought a brave battle with Multiple Sclerosis and was a hero to many. He was a 1959 graduate from Richlands High School. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1964 with a degree in Business Administration; and was a proud member of Sigma Omega Tau/Lambda Chi Alpha. It was here that he made amazing lifelong friends that he cherished. They will forever be his brothers. After graduating from college, Johnny moved to Atlanta, GA where he worked and became the ultimate Atlanta Falcons fan. In 2002, he moved back to Richlands, VA to be closer to his family. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Richlands, Virginia. Johnny loved fishing, Virginia Tech football, the Atlanta Falcons, bird watching, fantasy football, spending time with family and friends, and playing practical jokes. He is survived by: One Daughter: Natalie DeVries and husband, Garth of Annapolis, Maryland Two Grandchildren: Madeline DeVries and Liam DeVries One Sister: Mary Virginia Lawson and husband, Doug of Cedar Bluff, Virginia Two Nieces: Miss Lesley Lawson of Chicago, Illinois Mrs. Lauren Lawson Mies of Beckley, West Virginia A Memorial service for Johnny Groves Tizen will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 21, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Betzy ElifritsWarren officiating. Visitation will be 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm on Friday afternoon at the First United Methodist Church; 402 Suffolk Ave; Richlands, VA.
