Latha Nelson Mulkey

Latha Nelson Mulkey, age 80 of North Tazewell, VA passed away Saturday, February 13, 2016 at his home. He was born January 5, 1936 at Pounding Mill, VA and was a son of the late Andrew Jackson Mulkey and Vivian Trivett Mulkey. Nelson was a 1955 Graduate of Tazewell High School and was a retired Railroad Engineer having worked for Trailways, Norfolk & Western and Norfolk & Southern Railroads. He was a member of the United Transportation Union and enjoyed attending the Railroad Retirement Dinners. Nelson was a former member of the Tazewell Airport Authority and Tazewell Fire Department. Mr. Mulkey was a member of Pounding Mill Christian Church, where he served as Elder and Worship Leader. Mr. Mulkey was also a Veteran of the United States Army. Nelson loved his family and enjoyed golfing and fishing. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Charlotte Wilovene Waddell. Those who survive to cherish his memory include his loving wife of fifty-four years, Mary Etta Mulkey; one son, Gregory Dean Mulkey and fiancée, Tonia Robertson of Roanoke, VA; one daughter, Sheila Mulkey Hardy and husband, Kevin of Jacksonville, NC; two brothers, Kenneth Jackson Mulkey and wife, Rachel of North Tazewell, VA and Raymond C. Mulkey and wife, Nancy of Bluefield, VA; three grandchildren, Caitlin Nicole Gillespie of Tazewell, VA, Courtney Elizabeth and Shawn Douglas Mulkey and their mother, Rebecca Jane Mulkey of Cross Lanes, WV; a host of nieces and nephews, other family members and friends also survive. Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Mulkey, Jr., Michael Mulkey, Shawn Douglas Mulkey, Brian Bales, Eddie Turpin and C.J. Turpin. Honor pallbearers will be Jimmy Osborne, Jerry Simpson, Jessie Pauley and nephews. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, VA and the Virginia National Guard Honor Team from Gate City, VA. The family will receive friends at the Hurst – Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2016, where funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Chris White officiating. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m. Thursday, February 18, 2016.
