Leona Vandyke

Ms. Leona "Blondie" Joyce Vandyke, age 80 of Jewell Camp located in Jewell Ridge, Virginia, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, March 3, 2007 at her home surrounded by her loving family following a lengthy illness. Blondie was born in The Smith Ridge area of Jewell Ridge, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Charles D. and Nancy Katherine Smith Joyce, both Jewell Ridge natives. She was a woman of many talents, her working life began at the first boarding house on Jewell Ridge, and she later worked for the Jewell Ridge Company Store, Pittston, King Kone and then worked for the Tazewell County School System as a cook before finally retiring. She loved to garden, especially if gardening her flowers, her home was always surrounded with a variety of flowers that were blooming at different times of the years. She loved to cook for her friends and family, she was of the Holiness faith and when her health permitted she attended the Chicken Ridge Holiness Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray Lowe, her second husband. Ulysses Ferrell Vandyke, three sisters, Dorothy Joyce, Ann Sturgill, Mattie Christian and one brother Hubert Joyce. Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: Daughters: Sandra Mitchell and husband Kenneth of Stinson Ridge, Virginia Sheila Davis and husband Keith of Raven, Virginia Kimberly Vandyke of Jewell Camp, Virginia Son: Charles McKinley "Dusty" Vandyke and wife Patsy C. of Jewell Camp, Virginia Sister: Ruth Looney of Greenville, South Carolina Brothers: Earnest D. Joyce of Oakridge, Tennessee Maze Joyce of Clinton, Tennessee Charles Joyce of Oakridge, Tennessee Fourteen grandchildren, Nineteen great-grandchildren and special friends and caregivers, Bobbie Baxter, Sandy Horne, Teresa Keen, Connie Stiltner the Hospice Nurses also survive her along with a host of family and friends. Funeral services for Leona "Blondie" Joyce Vandyke will be held Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 11:00 am at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. William "Bill" Keen and Rev. Mike Altizer officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Mike Richardson, Earl Griffith, Jeff Horn, Bill Mintz, Dougie Roberts and Ken Ratcliffe. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bill Smith, Charles Sparks Lonnie Vandyke, Kenny Hogston, Clarence Bandy, Jerry Casey and Johnny Altizer. Friends may call Monday evening from 6 ? 9 pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
