Louis Alden Short June 14, 1948 - Feb 16, 2026 Louis Alden Short, age 77, of Raven, VA, passed away on Monday, February 16, 2026 at his home. Louis was born on July 14, 1948, in Buchanan Co., VA, to the late John Alden Short and Lovis Horn Short. Louis spent much of his life as a coal miner, working long hours underground to provide for his family. After his mining career, he continued his labor of love as a farmer, tending his fields with patience and pride. Louis was happiest when he was outdoors, whether it was hunting or cattle farming. He was known for his dedication to his family, friends, and neighbors--and he never met a stranger. He leaves behind a legacy of generosity and a strong work ethic. Those who knew him will remember him as a faithful husband, loving father, and a friend to all. He was a lifelong resident of the area. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ellen Horn and Pearl Osborne, and his brothers, Johnny Short and Roger Short. Louis is survived by: His loving wife, Carol Reed Short Son and Daughters: Allen Wayne Short, Susan Parkhurst and husband, Christopher, Laura Parkhurst and husband, Frederick Sisters and Brothers: Marie Smith and husband, Stanley, Ruby Osborne, Junior Short and wife, Faye, Dannie Short and wife, Mae, Paul Short and wife, Brenda Sisters-in-Law: Deborah Reed, Lisa Loyd and husband, Ken Grandchildren: Corey Short and wife, Emily, Alex “Mehalje” Parkhurst, Alaska Parkhurst Great Grandchildren: Alden Rain Short, Landon Osborne, Melanie Osborne, and Haylee Osborne A host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends also survived. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 2-4 pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA in remembrance of Louis Alden Short. Family and friends are invited to bring items of remembrance to temporarily place on the memorial table during their visit. The family of Louis Alden Short will honor his wishes to be cremated.
