Marvin Ratliff

Marvin Ratliff, age 68 of Wytheville, VA formerly of Buchanan County, was surrounded by his loving family at his home as he drew his first breath in heaven, April 11, 2009. He was born in Buchanan County, VA and was the son of the late Glen and Fannie Mullins Ratliff. Marvin worked for 25 years in the coal mines for Pittston at #11 in Jewell Valley before being injured from a roof fall. In his younger years he spent many joyful days at the lake, boating and fishing. He loved to hunt and fish, and of course spend time out in the yard tinkering with his lawnmowers. He was a member of the UMWA Local # 7327 of Jewell Valley and was of the Pentecostal faith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Sharon Kay Ratliff an infant son Larry Edward Ratliff a sister, Anna Belle (Sis) Rowe and two brothers, Hurley Ratliff and Junior Ratliff. Those who remain to carry on his spirit are: His loving wife of 48 years, Betty Sue Street Ratliff of Wytheville, VA Daughters: Barbara Green and husband David of Wytheville, VA Melissa Jones and husband Dowell of Bristol, TN Sons: Eddie Ratliff and wife Judy of Keen Mtn., VA Gary Ratliff and wife Cindy of Doran, VA David Ratliff and wife Amanda of Beaufort, SC His best friend and faithful companion, Sparky Sisters: Christine Ratliff of Keen Mtn., VA Bonnie Yates of Knoxville, TN Susie Smith of Hurley, VA Shirley Blankenship of Rowe, VA Brothers: Jim Ratliff of Asheboro, NC Jerry Ratliff of Chilhowie, VA Ralph Ratliff of Garden Creek, VA Raymond Ratliff of Paintlick, VA Bill Ratliff of Paige, VA Brother-in-law: James Street of Honaker, VA 12 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends also survive him. Funeral services for Marvin Ratliff will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev’s Ancil Childress and Arvil Arwood officiating. Interment will follow at the Street Family Cemetery at Rowe, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Joshua Ratliff, Donnie Rose, Aaron Eads, David “Jug” Ratliff, Jr., Dale Ratliff, Chris Ratliff, Willie Ratliff, Russell Ratliff and David Green. Dennis Lampford will serve as an Honorary Pallbearer. Friends may call on Tuesday evening from 6 – 9 pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA.
