Mary Clemons Smith

Mary Belle Clemons Smith, age 90 of Pounding Mill, VA died Saturday, December 24, 2011 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. She was born September 6, 1921 at Clearfork, VA and was a daughter of the late Joseph Henry and Josie Mae Neel Clemons. Mrs. Smith was a loving homemaker who enjoyed crocheting, cross-word puzzles and taking Sunshine Bus Tours. She was a member of the Farm Bureau Ladies Auxiliary and worked as a volunteer at the Tazewell County Fair for the Maxwell Homemaker’s Club. She loved her family; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled her heart with joy and she was proud of each of them. She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Raymond Smith; five brothers, Harve Clemons, Herman Clemons, Joe Clemons, Sam Clemons, and Johnny Clemons; one half-brother, Howard Neel; three sisters, Lucy Kidd, Mattie Clemons, and Ethel Carver. Those left to cherish her memories include two daughters, Viola Smith Asbury and husband, Jack of Bluefield, VA and Freda Louise Gates and husband, Roger of Pounding Mill, VA; two sons, William Earnest Smith and companion, Sarah Huffman of Afton, VA and Henry Jack Smith and wife, Geneva of Baptist Valley, VA; two sisters, Della Umbarger of Ceres, VA and Louise Clemons of Tazewell, VA; two brothers, Andy Clemons and wife, Naomi of Maryland, and Dillard Clemons of Richmond, VA; ten grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, other loving family members and friends also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Belle Clemons Smith will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at the Hurst – Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with the Rev. Roy Lee Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 – 9 p.m. Monday, December 26, 2011.
