Mary Ferrell

Ms. Mary Belle Ferrell age 92 of Claypool Hill, Virginia passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at a local Tazewell Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Washington County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Lula Blanche Ferrell Litton. To us Mary Belle was a friend, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and in later years a great-grandmother. As a person she was quiet, kind and helpful, she was accomplished in areas you would not have thought her to be, for instance she was a college graduate from Emory and Henry where she obtained a degree in teaching. She taught for many years in a Country School house where she taught seven grades in one room. She could play the piano and socially could be quiet proper. Yet her chosen life was that of a farmer’s wife and all that you might think that comes with the farming lifestyle. Year after year daily she cooked large meals for family and farmhands; she raised a garden and canned all summer and fall. She kept the accounting records for the farm, all while giving attention to each family members needs. She made the farm house a home, tended the farm animals and lived her life to its fullest. She had many things to teach you if you would take the time to learn from her. She was a lifetime resident of the area and had many friends in the community who knew and loved her and even up until her last day she was ready with a kind smile and if you were to ask her how she was, she would most likely respond, “Very well thank you”. Her love and her life were a treasure she willing shared with all she knew and loved. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Nonie Ferrell, sister, Jenette O’Henry and three brothers, Bill Litton, Gene Litton and Roy Litton. Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: Her son, Wade Gilbert Ferrell of Claypool Hill, Virginia Granddaughter, Christy Asbury and husband David of Claypool Hill, VA Two great-grandchildren, Kaden Asbury and Summer Brewer Special friends and care givers were Sisters of Mercy, Johnston Memorial Hospital staff, Heritage Hall and Dr. Martin Monahan. Funeral services for Mary Belle Ferrell will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Stafford Compton officiating. Interment will follow at the Ferrell Family Cemetery in the Steelesburg area of Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be York Lindsey, Danny Brown, Junior Hogston, David Asbury, Rick Barton and June Nipper. Honorary Pallbearer will be Bill Reese Taylor.
