McAdoo Stinson

McAdoo Stinson, age 88, of the Middle Creek section of Jewell Ridge, Virginia, passed away Friday, October 6, 2017 at his home. Retired US Army Staff Sargent McAdoo Stinson was born and raised on the middle Creek section of Jewell Ridge, Virginia. The son of the late John T. Stinson and Laura Bandy Stinson. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family. SSGT McAdoo Stinson a Korean and Vietnam Veteran served 20 years from 1949-1969 in the US Army. He began his service as a young sixteen year old boy. He traveled to the Philippines, Japan, Germany, Vietnam and Okinawa Island. In 1951 while he was in frontline combat in Japan he was wounded on right hand also while he was still in Japan the following year he was sitting in a foxhole and was shot in the neck. SSGT McAdoo Stinson received several medals including Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct, World War II Victory Medal, Korean and Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, United Nations Service Medal, Sharpshooter Badge, Carbine Bar, Pistol Bar and Diver Badge. After his retirement from the military, he went to work at Bishop Coal Mines, a Truck Driver for Glen Stinson in Honaker. He also worked at Holmes & Sons Recycling in Richlands. He lived in the mountains in the home he grew up in that he loved. He enjoyed gardening, mowing, and watching his deers. He was a quite devoted Husband-Father-Grandpaw-Son-and Brother. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Ella Frances Walden Stinson; one Son, Mac Junior Stinson; one grandson, John Nathaniel Taylor; three sisters, Mable Blankenship, Nanabell Dunford, and Rose Widener; and four brothers, Bill Jr., George, Cummings, and Roosevelt Stinson. Those left to cherish his memory are: Four Daughters: Becky Vandyke and husband, Bo of Stinson Ridge VA Patsy Clifton of Swords Creek VA Anna Stinson Mitchell and husband, Avery of Middle Creek Section Jewell Ridge Jane Stinson and Jimmy of Raven VA One Son: Donald and wife, Tina Stinson of Bradshaw WV One Daughter-in-Law: Cynthia Stinson of Orlando FL 14 Grandchildren; 23 Great Grandchildren; and 3 Great-Great Grandchildren also survive. He will be greatly missed by family and friends and all who loved and knew him. May we all take his example of love for his family and country with us throughout our lives. Funeral services for McAdoo Stinson will be conducted Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 2pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Pastor Lonnie Perkins officiating. Interment will follow at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia. Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 will conduct military graveside rites. Pallbearers will be: Adam Mitchell, Andy Mitchell, Tommy Stinson, Nathan Hays, Billy Stinson, and Danny Stinson. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640, Avery Mitchell, Bo Vandyke, Troy Mitchell, and Roger Lee Dunford.
