Melvin Peery Asbury Jr.

Melvin Peery Asbury, Jr., age 89, of Tazewell, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2023, in Radford, Virginia. Melvin was born March 18, 1934, in Tazewell, Virginia, and was the son of the late Pete Asbury and Sophia Callahan Asbury. Melvin graduated from Tazewell High School and then served his country in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959 with the Army Corps of Engineers in Germany. Over the years, he worked as a Baker at the Betsy Ross Bakery in Bluefield and was a truss maker at Bailey Lumber, but at heart, he was a farmer. He spent many years farming; he loved to garden and fish. He also worked with the Winterization Program at the Clinch Valley Community Action. Melvin was usually found sitting on the porch, in his chair, stringing green beans and watching traffic. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Diane Asbury, and four sisters, Fannie Herald, Nancy Cruey, Mary Rose Lambert, and Lizzie Webb. Melvin was the best dad to his kids, his sons were Wesley “Weasel” Asbury, Randall Asbury, and companion, Sylvia Newsome, all of Tazewell, VA. His daughters, Becky Hoover and her husband Doug of NC, and Angie Rose and her husband, Joey of North Tazewell. Melvin was an awesome PopPaw to his nine grandchildren, Josh Hoover and his wife, Rebecca, Monica Hoover, Samuel Rose, Sarah Beth Rose, Nathan Asbury, Cody Asbury, Audrey Asbury, Joseph Horn, and Jayden Newsome. great-grandchildren, Ava Hoover, Isla Hoover, and Keegan Cole Asbury who will be arriving in January. He was a brother to 8 sisters, the four surviving him are, Katherine Brown, Ella Herald, Shirley Bowling, Judy Rowe, and her husband Roger. A host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends also survive. The funeral service for Melvin Asbury will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 5th, 2023, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Mannie Elswick officiating. Interment will follow at the Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, and Casey-Short Post# 9640 will conduct military graveside rites. Pallbearers will be sons and grandchildren. The family will receive friends Saturday evening, November 4, 2023, beginning at 6:00 pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell.
