Phyllis Jane Coleman

“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies…Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come” (Proverbs 31:10 & 25). On Wednesday evening, January 31st, 2024, the Lord called Phyllis Jane Sayers Coleman home, at the age of 88, following a brief illness. Upon closing her eyes for the last time on this earth, Phyllis began her time of rejoicing as she walked through the gates to her heavenly home where she will continue to rejoice for all of eternity. Someone once said, “A life of significance is about serving.” Phyllis’s life was one of great significance, and she was the epitome of a true servant. For years, she faithfully served her husband, her family, her friends, her community, and her church. But most importantly, she served her Savior. Phyllis was a devout Christian. She was a faithful and steadfast member of the Richlands Tabernacle where she taught the junior girls’ Sunday school class for 47 years. She loved the Lord with her entire being. Her life displayed her close walk with Him as she endeavored daily to bring honor to His name. She was a prayer warrior, continually bowing herself before the Lord and interceding on the behalf of those she loved. The impact that she made on her family, her friends, her church, and the community cannot be surmised in just a few words but will forever be felt by all who knew and loved her. Born on October 18, 1935, Phyllis was the daughter of the late James Claude and Eva Mae Blankenship Sayers. She was a graduate of the Richlands High School, class of 1953. Apart from being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Phyllis was an integral part of the medical community. She was previously employed at the Clinch Valley Medical Center and at The Clinic at Claypool Hill where she worked as a Radiology Technician for 43 years. In addition to her parents, Phyllis is preceded in death by her in-laws, Holland and Bertha Coleman; six brothers, Jack Sayers, Fred Sayers, Charles Sayers, Bobby Sayers, Cecil Sayers, and Jesse Sayers; and three sisters, Opal White, Oweda Coleman, and Nadine Rasnake. Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: Her loving husband of 64 years, Harvey Keith Coleman of Richlands, VA One son: Steven (Teresa) Coleman of Cedar Bluff, VA One daughter: Beth (Wayne) Duncan of Radford, VA Three grandchildren: Chris Duncan of Christiansburg, VA, Whitney Coleman of Cedar Bluff, VA, and Maegan Coleman of Cedar Bluff, VA One brother: Joseph (Janis) Sayers of Meridian, Mississippi Sisters-in-law: Sandra Sayers of Cedar Bluff, VA, and Wilma Simmons Cedar Bluff, VA She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as a host of family, friends, and church family. Funeral services for Phyllis Jane Sayers Coleman will be conducted at the Richlands Tabernacle on Sunday, February 4th, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. James Vance, Rev. Boyd Coleman, and Rev. Roger Boyd officiating. Burial will follow at the Hess Cemetery on Miller Creek near Swords Creek, VA. Pallbearers will be her grandson and nephews. Friends may call after 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening, February 3rd, at the Richlands Tabernacle in Richlands, Virginia. Hurst Scott Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
