Phyllis Geraldine Messick

Phyllis Geraldine Martin Messick, age 73, of Pounding Mill, Virginia passed away, Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Ovie Lee and Faye Ella Smith Martin, former Richlands natives. She was a graduate of Richlands High School Class of 1959 and worked several years at Ovie’s Drive In in Doran. Phyllis worked and retired after 40 years from the banking industry. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She was a member of the Cedar Bluff Community Church where she had held the position of pianist, secretary, Christmas and Easter Cantata choir leader. Phyllis was an avid gardener and a lifelong resident of the area. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia (Ginger) Richardson Street and her in-laws, Edward and Rosie Messick. Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: Her loving husband, William A. Messick of Pounding Mill, VA Her son, Martin Edward (Marty) Messick and wife Elizabeth of Sevierville, TN Sister, Jo Russ Wright and husband Clarence of Cedar Bluff, VA Brothers: James W. Martin and wife Gwen of Ormond Beach, FL John O Martin of Port Orange, FL Sherman E. Martin and wife, Connie of Richlands, VA Brother-in-law, Glen Messick and wife Doris of GA Grandchildren, Roxanne Bristol Messick, Victoria Virginia Messick and step-grandson, Joe Teague Several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and nephews also survive along with a host of family and friends. Funeral services for Phyllis Geraldine Martin Messick will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 20, 2015 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Richard Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be James William Martin, Anthony Martin, Darrell Meade, Mark Oliver, Ronnie Sparks, Bo Lester, Greg Street, Jeff Patton, Ethain Keene and Chad Meade. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men of Cedar Bluff Community Church. Friends may call from 6-9 PM at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home on Thursday evening.
