Ramon Elmer Childress, Sr.

Ramon Elmer Childress, Sr. age 69 of Bandy, VA died Friday, July 1, 2016 at his home. He was born August 26, 1946 in Russell County, VA and was a son of the late James A. and Nora F. Stacy Childress. Ramon attended Tazewell High School and was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the Army's First Infantry Division. During his service, he received several medals, ribbons and commendations to include the Purple Heart and a Hero Award. He was a man who enjoyed going to Flea Markets and spoiling his family, especially his grandchildren. Ramon will be remembered as a man who was very caring and kind. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Gaye Edgin and two infant sisters. Those who survive to cherish his memory include his loving wife of forty-two years, Nancy Jane Childress; one daughter, Amy Whitt and husband, Cecil of Cedar Bluff, VA; two sons, Ramon Elmer Childress, II. of Tazewell, VA and Jesse Childress and wife, Annette of Bandy, VA; five sisters, Nora Bostic of Mt. Vernon, OH, Janice Patrick and husband, Eulis and Elizabeth Monk and husband, Richard both of Tazewell, VA, Wilma Hall and husband, Danny of Bristol, TN and Darlene Lewis and husband, David of Salem, VA; two brothers, James Childress and wife, Daryl of Bell Springs, VA and Clyde Childress and wife, Rita of North Tazewell, VA; six grandchildren, Corey Whitt, Cheyenne Childress, Ryan Childress, Joshua Childress, Cierra Childress and Gage Childress; several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends also survive. Funeral services for Ramon Elmer Childress, Sr. will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at the Hurst – Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with Minister Ronnie Grizzle officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will be Corey Whitt, Cecil Whitt, Jr., Ryan Childress,Cheyenne Childress, Russell Honaker, and Russell Honaker, II. Honorary pallbearers will be Joshua Childress, Cierra Childress and Gage Childress. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 in Richlands, VA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2016.
