Robert Lee Holmes

Robert Lee Holmes, age 67, of the Hale Creek section of Pilgrims Knob, Virginia died Friday, August 1, 2014 in a Pikeville, Kentucky hospital, having fought a brave and courageous battle with a long illness. Mr. Holmes was born in Russell County, Virginia and was the son of the late Ernest and Susie Boardwine Holmes. He was a hardworking man who held several jobs in life, including working on a farm early in life, then worked for many years for the Virginia Department of Highways in Lebanon, VA. He retired after thirty-six years as a truck driver, with various trucking companies. Mr. Holmes was an outdoorsman who loved to fish. He was a mechanic who liked to tinker with cars as a hobby. He also enjoyed science, working with wood and doing different crafts. He was of the Christian faith. He is survived by: His loving wife of 41 years, Sandra Ann Edwards Holmes Eight Nieces: Regina Matney Peters and husband, Seth of Bluefield, West Virginia Leslie Edwards Phillips and husband, Michall of Virginia Beach, Virginia Patricia Edwards Harman and husband, Tommy of Tazewell, Virginia Tonya Edwards McCoy and husband, Travis of Coburn, Virginia Lisa Edwards Brown and husband, Kevin of Gratton, Virginia Pamela Edwards Deel and husband, Christopher of Pilgrim’s Knob, Virginia Melissa Edwards Johnston and husband, Mark of Scott Depot, West Virginia Carri Edwards of Lebanon, Virginia Two Nephews: Joseph Edwards and wife, Beth of Montross, Virginia Kenneth Matney and wife, Sally of Christiansburg, Virginia Also surviving are 15 grandnephews and 6 grandnieces, along with several friends. Funeral services for Robert Lee Holmes will be conducted on Monday, August 4, 2014 at 11:00 am at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with Rev. Danny Short officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Nephews and Grandnephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 -11am on Monday morning.
