Roy C. Lawson

Roy Clinton Lawson, age 80, of the Greasey Creek section of Jewell Ridge, passed away Saturday, January 22, 2022 at his home. He was born on December 12, 1941 and was the son of the late Teba Lawson and Evelyn Smith Cole and his stepfather, William A. Cole, Sr. Roy was a member of the Chicken Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a retired coal miner having worked with the Pittston Coal Company for 40 years. He was a member of the UMWA Local #1760 as well as the UMWA Chaplain Corps. He attended Whitewood High School where he excelled in sports. His love of sports led him into coaching, where over the years, he coached hundreds of children in Little League Baseball and Softball, Senior League Baseball and Softball. His teams made several trips to the state tournament; therefore, leaving a lasting impact on the Richlands Little League program. Roy loved many things in life. After retiring, he enjoyed running his sawmill with his son and brothers-in-law. He enjoyed watching sports, listening to and watching gospel singing, western movies, throwing corn hole bags, and playing games with his family. He never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand and would give you the shirt off his back. Above all, Roy loved God and he loved and was so proud of his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Fred and Helen McGlothlin, who loved him like a son; brothers, James Lawson, and Bob Cole; infant brother, Johnny Cole; grandson, Eric Bryant Joyce. His brother William A. Cole, Jr. (Bill) missing since March 2021. Survivors are: His wife of 59 years, Velma McGlothlin Lawson Daughters: Dwana Joyce and husband, Ronald of Jewell Ridge; Teresa Lawson of Jewell Ridge, Virginia Son: Dwayne Lawson of Jewell Ridge, Virginia Brothers: Don Cole and wife, Jill of Ohio; Allen Cole and wife, Debbie of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; and Tommy Cole and wife, Seretta of Swords Creek, Virginia Brothers In Law: Winfred McGlothlin of Jewell Ridge, Virginia; Clarence Freasure McGlothlin and wife, Sandra of Jewell Ridge, Virginia; and Fred McGlothlin and wife, Dorothy of Jewell Ridge, Virginia Sister In Law: Mozelle Perkins of Cedar Bluff, Virginia Grandchildren: April Joyce Hester and husband, Will; Jennifer Joyce; Seana Overton; Sean Tyler Overton; Sheyenne Altizer and husband, Mickey; Teana Overton, Seania Overton; Brittany Lawson Byrd and husband Jason; Jessica Lawson Hagy and husband Ryan; and Devin Lawson Great Grandchildren: Connor Joyce; Hunter Joyce; Kohl Hester; Ty Hester; Aniya Overton, with whom he had a special bond. He lovingly nicknamed her “Sweet Pea”…she was and always will be his sweet pea; Tadjh Overton; Emerson Altizer; Poppy Altizer; Shiloh Johnson; Joseph Gilbert, Peyton Byrd; Caleb Byrd; Harper Byrd; Audrey Dye; London Lawson; Kasen Hagy; and Abigail Hagy Special thanks to: Ed Day for preparing the gravesite; granddaughter, Brittany Byrd; and Sarah Quesinberry for her assistance in Roy’s final days. Funeral services for Roy C. Lawson will be conducted Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 11am at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Bill Smith, Rev. Sandra McGlothlin, and Rev. Mike Altizer officiating. Interment will follow at McGlothlin Family Cemetery on Bearwallow near Jewell Ridge, Virginia. Pallbearers will be: Sean Tyler Overton, Tadjh Overton, Mickey Altizer, Devin Lawson, Jason Byrd, Ryan Hagy, Connor Joyce, and Wimpy McGlothlin. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Frank McGlothlin, Jeff White, Duane Artrip, Reid Artrip, Adam Mitchell, Allen Richardson, Zachary Dawkins, and men of the Chicken Ridge Holiness Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Chicken Ridge Church, 1008 Winfred Rd, Jewell Ridge, VA 24622 or to the family. Friends may call after 6pm on Tuesday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia. Members of the UMWA Chaplain Corps will conduct memorial services for the funeral on Wednesday.
