Scotty L. Joyce

Scotty Lynnwood Joyce, age 44, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away on July 27th, 2017, in Johnson City, TN. Scotty is preceded in death by his mother, Linda Darnell Jackson; his maternal grandparents, Herman and Lean Houchins Shelton; and his paternal grandfather, Hufford Joyce, Sr. Scotty was born on April 18, 1973, at Clinch Valley Hospital in Richlands, VA. In 1991, he graduated from Richlands High School. After graduating high school, he moved to Farmville, VA, where he attended Longwood College. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Drama. Shortly after his college graduation, Scotty obtained several jobs in theatre and design. Throughout the years, he traveled extensively and lived in Richmond, California, Texas, Florida, and New York, all before returning back home to Virginia to live. Scotty spent the last eight years as a dedicated and loving caretaker to his Aunt Shirley. Aside from that, he was currently employed through Tazewell County Public Schools as a substitute teacher. He was also pursuing a Master’s degree in Special Education through Liberty University. He is survived by a special aunt, Shirley Ann Shelton of the home; his father and stepmother, Hufford Joyce, Jr. and wife Vicky of Paintlick, VA; his paternal grandmother, Lydia Joyce of Tazewell, VA; his stepfather, Gary Jackson of Richlands, VA; one sister, Penny Renee Shelton of Troy, VA; two half-sisters, Octave Vass of Paintlick, VA, and Ciji Jackson of Richlands, VA; two half-brothers, Hufford Joyce, III and wife Natasha of Ohio, and Hunter Joyce and wife Donna of Richlands, VA; one special nephew, Tyler Joyce of the home; and one special niece, Brittney Puckett of Bristol, TN. A host of family and friends also remain. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 31st, 2017, at 2pm at the Hurst Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, VA, with Rev. Tim Lester and Rev. Larry Ball officiating. Interment will follow at the Clinch Valley Cemetery in Richlands. Pallbearers will be Tyler Joyce, Rick Puckett, Roy Christian, Gary Jackson, Mike Street, Calvin Dowdy, Woodrow Smith, and Donnie Lester. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 30th, 2017, at Hurst Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
