Shelvie Mae Cantrell

Mrs. Shelvie Mae Compton Cantrell, age 78 of Cedar Bluff, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, June 14, 2019. Born in Buchanan County, Virginia on September 7, 1940, she was the oldest child of the Elder Harman Blanchard and Mary Lorraine Hardin Compton. She married the love of her life, Walter Herston Cantrell on 23 November 1957, in Glade Springs, Virginia, and was preceded in death by Walter on 05 January 2019. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother and her sister, Eunice Pearl Compton; two infant sons and one infant daughter; one brother-in-law, Larry Osborne; one nephew, Gregory Lee Compton; one great nephew, SSGT Tyler Compton; several aunts, uncles, cousins, her in-laws Luther Washington and Eva Tennessee Horn Cantrell, several extended family and friends; her adopted daughter, Mary Ann Blankenship Keene, whom she loved dearly; and her fur babies: Momma Dog, Beavis, Miss Kitty and all of her babies, and her beloved Donk. Shelvie lived most of her life in the Cedar Bluff, VA area, and was raised in the Primitive Baptist faith. She loved hearing the services from The Church of New Beginnings in Cedar Bluff, VA. She was an avid RHS sports fan and although her health prevented her from attending many events, she loved listening to the play-by-play action provided by WGTH and announcers Ron Brown and Brent Warner. Although not of the “computer age”, Shelvie and Walter both loved reading Dr. Brent Warner’s “life lessons”, as she called them. She was an avid quilter, embroiderer, and crafter. Shelvie was very contented to be a loving homemaker, wife, and mother. No one ever left her house hungry or empty handed. She always made sure she had plenty of crafts on hand and available for gifts to family, friends, and loved ones. She especially loved canning rhubarb jam and vegetables from her garden. Survivors include her children: daughter Lynne Clark of Cedar Bluff; her son Terry Bramell Cantrell also of Cedar Bluff; and daughter Amanda (and Gary) Deel of Pounding Mill, VA; three brothers: Bob (her best friend and confident) and wife Martha Compton of Richlands, VA; Donald “Duck” and wife Shirley Compton of Manassas, VA; and Gary Compton, Sr. of Blackstone, VA; one sister, Judy Osborne of Pounding Mill, VA; four special sisters of her heart: Bertina Vance, Frances Dye, Rosa Compton, and DeAnna Fife; her adopted family, The Brewster Bunch (Keith, Ashley, and families); her adopted son, Leslie Compton; four grandchildren: Chris and Kathy Clark of Damascus, VA; McKenzie Deel and companion, Dakota of Pounding Mill; Meghan Deel, Baby and Lulu of Pounding Mill, VA; and her namesake Carrie Eva Mae Cantrell of Cedar Bluff; great-grandchildren: Summer Skye (and Alex McVey)of Damascus; and Lucas Clark also of Damascus, VA; several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends also survive. She is also survived by her loving Doxie, Daisy Duke;Chi-Chi,Rebel,Bojangles and Whiskey, The dogs in the dog lot her Grand Horses Butter Cup,Sissy,Silver and Midnights Moonshine, her Grand Kitties Mom’s Baby Sunshine, Little Bits, Gray Baby, Lighting and Snowball Kitty her Great Grand Furr Babies Minnie, Axel, Subastian and Lucas’s fish and frogs. Funeral services for Mrs. Shelvie Mae Compton Cantrell will be held Tuesday 18 June 2019 at 1:30 PM in the Hurst-Scott Funeral Hone Chapel in Richlands, VA, with a special reading by Dr. Brent Warner, Reverend Roger Boyd, Reverend Don Smith, and Reverend Danny Houchins officiating. The family will begin receiving family and friends at 11:30 until the funeral hour. Burial will follow in the Horn-Cantrell Cemetery on Horn Mountain, where she will be laid to rest beside her loving husband on his beloved Mountain. Pallbearers will be: Chris Clark, Summer Clark, Alex Mcvey, Nick Regon, Danny Skeens, Pat Shrader, Adam Clark, and her “red-headed son, Craig Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be: McKenzie Rowe, Meghan Deel, Carrie Cantrell, Lucas Clark, Earl Dye, Sr., David Olinger, the Staff of Helping Hands Hospice; JMH Wound Care, Dr. Brent Warner, the Brewster Bunch, and the Staff and Management Hurst-Scott Funeral Home.
