Sylvia Jean Short

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sylvia Jean Short, age 76, of Raven, Virginia, who went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at a Richlands, Virginia hospital, following a lengthy and courageous illness. Born on January 15, 1950, in Russell County, Virginia, Sylvia was the daughter of the late Larnie McGlothlin and Creasy Maxie McGlothlin. She grew up with a strong work ethic and a gentle spirit, later dedicating many years as a talented seamstress for Honaker Sewing/Jacqueline Manufacturing and working the press for Swan Cleaners. While Sylvia was known for her dedication to her work, her true masterpiece was her family. She was a woman of profound love, warmth, and devotion—a cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Sylvia’s heart was happiest when she was surrounded by those she loved, and she poured her life into nurturing her family. She is now peacefully reunited in Heaven with her parents; her loving husband, James Oliver Short; her beloved son, James Bradley Short; and her brother, Dean McGlothlin. Her beautiful legacy of love lives on through her surviving family: Her cherished son, Christopher Mark Short, and his wife, Lois, of Honaker, VA; Her sisters, Angeline Mullins and her husband, Jerry, of Baptist Valley, VA, and Della Proffitt of Kentucky. Sylvia’s greatest joy in life was her grandchildren: Kristy Chafin and her companion, Tayton Edwards; Taylor Short; Christine Byrd; and Russell Chafin. She was also blessed with three precious great-grandchildren, and her love will stretch into the future to encompass another sweet great-grandchild who is currently on the way. Sylvia’s kindness, resilient spirit, and unconditional love will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. A funeral service honoring the life and legacy of Sylvia Jean Short will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, August 31, 2026, with the Rev. Dennis White and Rev. Paul Vandyke officiating. Interment will follow at the Richardson Family Cemetery on Horton Ridge near Swords Creek, Virginia. Relatives and Friends will serve as pallbearers.
