Trula Alvernie Mitchell

Ms. Trula Alvernie Short Mitchell, age 83, drew her first breath in heaven on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. She gently left this world to celebrate her own independence day, a day of rejoicing and being reunited with her loved ones. She was born on November 21, 1933 in Russell County and was the daughter of the late, Alex Richard and Salie Jane Horn Short. Trula dedicated her life to raising her family and she lived her for life for God and her light of faithfulness and love was a true beacon to many souls. Her smile and laughter always came from her heart, a heart that was filled with love for everyone she knew. She was lovingly known as Aunt Vernie to most of her family, and all of them boasted about her love for cooking. She would fire up that old wood stove and make a meal that would bring everyone on the mountain running. She was a true woman of God, her heart’s desire was to see all of her family in heaven one day. Trula was a former Sunday school teacher and faithful member of the Jewell Ridge Church of God and she was a lifetime resident of the area and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, she was reunited in heaven with her loving husband, James Mitchell, Jr.,; brothers, Arthur, Alden, James, Billy, Henry and Charlie Short; sisters, Gussie Short White, Goldie Short Mitchell, and half-sister, Pearlie Short Grizzle. Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: Her Sons: Jerry Mitchell and wife, Peggy of Radford, VA Bruce Mitchell and wife, Linda of Jewell Ridge, VA Randal Mitchell and wife, Phyllis of Cedar Bluff, VA Joseph Mitchell and wife, Mary Ann of Gloucester, VA Stanley Mitchell and wife, Lisa of Jewell Ridge, VA Mark Mitchell and wife, Brenda of Honaker, VA Sister, Maggie Shelton of Raritan, OH Six grandchildren, Heather Custer and husband John, Cameron Mitchell and wife Charlene, Shawn Mitchell and wife Ashley, Savannah Williams and husband, Bradley, Bryan Mitchell and Joseph Mitchell. Eight great grandchildren: Jordan Custer, Jacob Mitchell, Joseph Mitchell, Abigail Mitchell, Isabella Mitchell, Bella Mitchell, Olive Mitchell and Juniper Williams survive her along with several nieces and nephews. Funeral service for Trula Alvernie Short Mitchell will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, July 7, 2017 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia with the Ministers Eddie Dalton and Wayne White officiating. Interment will follow at Christian-Mitchell Family Cemetery on Smith Ridge. Great Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may beginning calling at 6:00 pm on Thursday evening at the funeral home.
