Verla Nell Harrison

Verla Nell Smith Harrison, an Angel among us here on Earth earned her wings to Heaven on December 20, 2016. Born to the late Jeff and Laura Smith on April 29, 1928 in the hills of Jewel Ridge, VA. Verla’s servant’s heart lead her on a short transition from her country life to Miami, FL in support of the WWII efforts by manufacturing shells. Upon her return to her lifelong residence in Pounding Mill, VA; she connected with the love of her life marrying the late Jack Walter Harrison. Sharing 62 years of marriage as a devoted wife; was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and never met a stranger that she didn’t give her complete heart too. Verla was instrumental in the development of the Maxwell Homemakers Club, member of the Maxwell Church of God, and served on several committees for the Tazewell County Fair Association. Verla’s “most precious treasures” in life was her family (Surviving): Daughter Lorraine and husband Don Dean; Grandson J.D. and wife Becky Dean; Granddaughter Karen and husband Matt Waldron; with three Great Grandchildren: Alexandria Dean, Tristan Dean, Damon Waldron; and her beloved fur baby Buddy. On any given day you could observe Verla sharing the Gospel and talking about her “most precious treasures”. Other “treasures” surviving are: Brother Jack Smith of Kingman, AZ and Sisters: Myrtle Anders of Ocala, FL and Frankie Jessee of Tampa, FL. Her “treasures” preceding her return to Heaven were: Husband Jack Harrison; Brothers Buck Smith, Max Smith, and Bob Smith; Sisters Edna Hartong, Carol Shrader, and Reva Elswick. Services for this special Angel of God will be held at Hurst Scott Funeral Home in Tazewell, VA with family receiving friends on Thursday December 22 from 6-9pm. Funeral services on Friday December 23 at 10:00 am being at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with Rev. Lawrence Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memorial Garden in Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will be, J.D. Dean, Tristan Dean, Mark Smith, Jason Hodge, Brad Matney, and Clyde Roberts. Honorary pallbearers will be, Matt Waldron, Darrell Fisher, Bo Smith, Bobby Lakie and Lugo Hill.
