Windell "Wilkie" Mitchell

Mr. Windell Lewis “Wilkie” Mitchell, Sr. age 70 of Jewell Ridge, Virginia passed away February 4, 2011 at his home following a brief illness. He was born in Buchanan County on Jewell Ridge and he was the son of the late Noah Matthew and Pearl Grace Hagerman Mitchell both former Buchanan County natives. Wilkie was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during the Vietnam Conflict as part of the 36 Engineering A Company. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandpa. He worked for Pittston Coal Company as a construction foreman in charge of installing mines for them. He loved to hunt, wood carving, collect knives and die cast cars but most of all he enjoyed gardening. He was a member of the American Legion Post# 175 of Bradshaw, WV, and was a member of the UMWA Local# 7327 of Jewell Ridge, VA. Wilkie attended the Crossview Church of Christ and was a lifetime resident of Buchanan County, he will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by six brothers, Everett, Noah, Auldie, Hubbard, Dennie, Reese Mitchell, and one sister Naomi Lusak. Those who survive him are: His loving wife of 44 years, Nellie Rose Bentley Mitchell of Jewell Ridge, VA His daughter, Delenne Rose Mitchell of Jewell Ridge, VA His son, Windell Lewis Mitchell, Jr. and wife Amanda of Jewell Ridge, VA Sisters: Sarah Vandyke of Jewell Ridge, VA Mildred Schydzik of Cleveland, OH Reda Mitchell of Belfast, VA Brothers: Laymon Mitchell of Jewell Ridge, VA Aubert Mitchell of Cedar Bluff, VA Grandchildren, Ryan Heath Mitchell and Seth Hagan Mitchell 6 step-grandchildren, Keith, Samantha, Isaac, Nathan, Emily and Timothy 2 step-grandchildren, Dalton and Branton Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of family and friends. Funeral services for Windell “Wilkie” Mitchell will be conducted, Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, VA with the Rev.’s Hobert E. Kennedy and Troy Lester officiating. Interment will follow at the Mitchell family Cemetery located on the Pea Patch section of Jewell Ridge. Nephews will serve as pallbearers and an Honorary Pallbearer will be Randy Mitchell. Military graveside rites will be performed by the American Legion Post # 175 of Bradshaw, WV. Friends may call on Monday evening from 6-9 pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.
