Alice Brown

Mary Alice Cunningham Brown, age 70, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2022 in an Abingdon, Virginia hospital. She was born in Charlottesville, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Dorris A. and Elizabeth Rollins Cunningham. She had made her home in the Cedar Bluff area most of her life and was a retired Psychology professor at Southwest Virginia Community College. She was a Richlands High School Class of 1967 graduate and received her Associate's Degree from Bluefield College in 1969, her Bachelor’s degree from ETSU in 1971; and her Master's Degree in 1974 from ETSU. Mary Alice became a counselor at SWCC in May of 1974 and then became a member of the Psychology faculty in 1976 until her retirement in 2017. She was a charter member of the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands, Virginia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Earl “Hoppy” Brown, Jr. Survivors are: Daughter: Cynthia Renee Brown of Decatur, Georgia Son: Michael Scott Brown of Belfast, Virginia Sister: Judy Carol Cunningham Runge and husband, Charles of Hendersonville, North Carolina Brother: David Cunningham and wife, Tina of Chapin, South Carolina Granddaughter: Isabella Grace Brown Several Nieces and Nephews also survive. Private funeral services for Mary Alice Cunningham Brown will be conducted at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Dr. Rev. Marc Brooks officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be: Michael Brown, Jim Reynolds, Wayne Davis, Gary Davis, Shawn Cole, Charles Runge.
